Lately I’ve seen diesel engine truck techs going through some growing pains with these new Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF). It would seem these DPF’s require Low Sulfur Engine Oil (LSEO) along with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel (ULSD). When these engines are right, they make the whole shop smell like the pool room at the “Y”. Unlike the eye burning smoke from my early days! I’m beginning to think this is all a good thing and have been re-thinking my own opinions on engine oils...
Although I don’t work on diesel engines every day anymore like I did 10 yrs ago: back in that day, I seen way to many medium/heavy duty diesel engines short lived due to carbon fouling problems mostly from prolonged idling and light loading.
I’m thinking with the new oil blends of late, less deposits with-in the combustion chamber, less carbon fouling of carbon damns and ring lands. Not only in diesels but spark ignited engines too.
What are some of your thoughts on the LSEO or even Low Ash Oil in gasoline engines? As it relates to internal deposits, oxygen sensors and what ever else?
