Low rpm's and low push

1986 SEA RAY SUNDANCER 268

I have the 350 MERC 260. I took the boat out on it's first voyage and only got about 11miles per hour and hit 3500 rpm's.

I checked the cap and rotor and cleaned out the coil as well.

The oil is full and it looks like the oil pressure is good. HOwever I saw the pressure gauge bounce a few times so I think the oil sending unit migh tneed to be replaced. Does anyone have any ideas? The engine does sound like it's missing.

Thanks.

Has the boat had a tune up recently? Check the plugs & wires. Also check the prop for any dings or other obvious damage. I don't think 3500 RPM would be WOT - what does the manual say for WOT? I had similar problem with 92' 270DA - it turned out to be bad ignition coil (max RPM was 2800 rpm). Replaced coil and it runs fine. Good luck!

2nd on a full tune up, my 210 did the same thing when I bought it. Ran like a scolded dog with a tune up. BTW how do you "clean out" a coil?

when we bought our 1986 268 weekender i had a similar problem. Turned out someone replaced the outdrive with a 1.94 ratio drive instead of a 1.5 ratio drive
