So sorry to hear. Is there a link to a local obituary that would help put a face behind his callsign and avatar?

    Great pic!

So did he fall stepping onto the boat?

We lost a great guy that I had literally met just the week before at our club when he mis-planted a foot getting back aboard his boat last year.

I've off the grid for awhile...this is tragic. I can't say any more than what's been said already. RIP.

None of my business but I'm curious too.

I have a friend going through some serious business and health problems, he's taken to drinking a bit more than he used to. Unknown to him I have followed him to his boat a few times and waited to make sure he's on it and down for the night. It was easier to keep an eye on him when I was slipped next door, I would sit in my cockpit and listen for the splash that might come because he was peeing off the swim platform to save a flush.

I figure it don't hurt to keep an eye on each other, just in case.

    RIP Captain XravenX

    Woody,

We really don’ know and most likely never will. I talked with his sister who was the person that identified the body when it was found close to Eastern Yacht Club in Middle River. She said he looked “very peaceful” and there were no signs he struggled. He also had some bruising on his lower chin and neck, maybe hitting the boat or the pier before he went in. John had two boats at our club, his bigger boat was on B pier and the smaller runabout was on A pier, so he could have fallen in at either one, but knowing John, I would think at that time of the evening he was just going to the bigger boat to turn in. I don’t think he ever made it on the boat.

I am still in shock over this. To make it worse today (Friday) the weather was sunny and warm with no wind to speak of here in Baltimore. Had things been different this would have been one of those days when I would email him at his business and say, “meet you at the club at noon for a boat ride and lunch”.

The turnout for his funeral was huge, I don’t think I have ever seen one that big before. He touched a lot of people’s lives and had a lot of friends, so I am not alone in missing him… that is for sure.

    Bill

I definitely will miss John. My heart sank when we saw the missing persons report and the name of is boat included in the write up. I remember the springs when he would winter at Gunpowder and during spring launch he would hang out in the grass behind the boats. He was so proud of his boat - he LOVED it! Had it re-powered a few seasons if I remember correctly. We'd sit in the spring evenings on J-pier and talk, laugh, and listen to him pick on Bill....! Such a super guy! It's so sad to have the great ones go so soon.

He isn't really gone until the last one that knows him is.

I'm very sorry to here this sad news also. I guess we get used to getting on and off our boats so often that we don't think to much about it.
Condolences to his family also ...

    Tommy
