losing gear lube...and my mind

So this is kinda funny. A boat came into the shop today with issue of drive fluid leaking out of the water intake. Pulled the impeller and pressure tested the drive... yup! Driveshaft bearing carrier was leaking :)

Well I'll be. The internet isn't always just bussllisht and drama afterall...it can be helpful.

Yeah, I thought it was interesting based on the timing of when that boat came in and this thread!

I took notice that the spring in the oil seal was gone - somewhere to never be found again! In this case, it was a '99 model.

So the lesson learned...As a general rule, if you have a 1999 to 2010 and you've never replaced that carrier/seal assembly and you're installing a new impeller...just do it...even if it passes the leak-down test. It's a $30-40 part and no time if the tech is already in there doing the impeller.

Well... there could be some time in it. They don't always come out easily :)

But, sure, if someone wanted it changed at 15 years old I would say that's still reasonable and an acceptable "preventative maintenance" expense. But I also have seen many, many drives that are 20 to 30 years old and never leak. There's no way to put any analytics or data analysis to this to determine a "best if used by" date :)

I understand, but for as much as these dang things cost to maintain not to mention the pain-in-the-ass-factor of being down and having to pull it out...probably just a good ide to change it every 15 years in my book.

With that being said, I'll come back in here in 2038 and remind everyone.
