I am looking to upgrade my electronics however dont know where to start.

My boat is on a lake so we really dont need any of it but because I am kinda a nut I just want it.

Our 460 is a 2000 model so all of what we have is way outdated.

How do you even start to put together what all would need to be changed out IE wiring , open air radar and what all needs to be purchased.

Obviously being on a lake dont need to spend 25k for It but would be nice though to have new color and touch screens.

Turning to you Electronics pros to give advice.

What I dont want to do is just call Raymarine with a open check book .
The other issue would be getting a tech to come instal it or is is just a lot of plug and play.
Or do I save myself a ton of boat bucks and just go the Ipad route?

I would also be open to a couple years old set up.

Start from scratch, Raymarine, Garmin and Simrad all have nice stuff. Should decide what you are looking to accomplish. Should be able to get radar, auto pilot and chartplotter under 10k as package. Install can get pricey if you can't do it yourself.

$25k is probably not far off if you pay to have it installed! As mentioned above I bet $10k is a pretty realistic budget for self-install.

I've got a thread going below outlining my current upgrade project. I'm replacing some of my '97 vintage Raymarine with Garmin this spring. I'm waiting to do the radar until a future year due to the cost. It's possible your 2001 radar antenna will talk to some newer equipment. Grab the serial number and call Raymarine. If not (if you're full analog), your stuck like the rest of us. The radar setup is the most costly bit of gear at the helm...

We went all new Raymarine when they came out with the eS series with both touch and knob controls. Top to bottom did Super HD radar, Evo Autopilot, 12" and 7" MFD, i70 instruments, Ray260 VHF w AIS. It'll be 4 years this summer and couldn't be happier. Off the top of my head I want to say the total came in around $16k installed. I'll look for some pics.

As we speak I am having a new nema backbone, garmin 8616, phantom 54 open aray, fusion head unit, XM Weather, and new transducer installed, very excited to try it out.

I went the cost effective route, as I'm on a lake as well.

I have Garmin chartplotter, NMEA 2k backbone, and a Garmin radio.

I didn't bother with radar as a pilot app gives me far superior radar (and a host of other aspects). The only thing it can't do is paint things on the surface at night.

It all comes down to need vs want vs pocket book...

I am doing an upgrade right now on my boat, I bought everything at the Miami Boat show from The GPS Store. I am installing the Furuno TZ2 12” (touchscreen) screen connected to there 6KW NXT open array radar with 4’ array, then my second 12” screen will actually be a Garmin 1242 (touchscreen), the reason for the mix match is Furuno I felt offers the best radar on the market and Garmin offers the best GPS mapping interface and Active Captain, my 2 screens are not directly next to each other so I can get away with the different screens alathough both being touchscreen they look almost identical. I also went with Furuno Autopilot NAV 300 with remote control and heading sensor, and a Icom black box VHF (400BB). This entire setup all inclusive of cables, NEMA 2000 back bone, just a bout $14k. I will be adding an AIS and a FLIR camera over the next few months, just need to recover a little cash.... ;)

I’m doing just the Display, and a new RADAR dome, Simrad NSS9 EVO3 and 4G RADAR. I’m going to try and self install, but will call an installer if it goes south!

What are the i70 instruments used for if you have Evo and 2 MFD’s? I’m having this exact setup installed without i70 and I’m just curious. Thanks

One i70 is always on depth and the other usually set to show time, knots (SOW or SOG), DTW. Also have other screens that have water temp and other data. It also balanced out the placement and gives the option of putting engine data on the i70s in the future.

A couple of shots of the dashboard/instrument update. Before and after. Mush more impressive difference when they're lit up.

Looks awesome. Good to see you "righted" your instruments. That angled setup you had before would have driven me crazy! Nicely done.

I was in your same spot a couple of years ago, with the same generation boat and electronics. This was mostly a self-install, with a bunch of help from my marina owner. I detailed as much as I could on this thread: http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php...pgrades-just-did-arch-cockpit-lighting.82134/

My total all-in for not only the electronics, but also the lighting, audio and everything is less than $15k.
