Looking to purchase a 2005 52 sedan bridge.

Upgraded MAN diesels

Bow and Stearns thrusters

Freshwater

Could you guys offer some tips and what I should watch out for or any known issues?

Scott the 50/52 Sedan is a great boat
Feel free to PM me and I am happy to share our experiences with the boat.

My previous boat was a 2005 500 (52) DB. The current owner just told me yesterday that he has his eye on a 58 DB. I was the 2nd owner and the current owner is 3rd. I know the boat well and it is probably the cleanest freshwater (Lake Michigan/Huron) example you’ll find. Has a hydraulic swim platform and stern thruster added by Florida Bow Thruster. This boat has great lineage and open checkbook maintenance/detailing since new. Blue hull. She has the Cummins QSM-11’s. Sorry if that’s a no-go in your quest for MAN’s.

PM me if you want additional details. I know the boat like I still own it.

I just purchased mine in Oct so I don’t have a lot of use yet but I have crawled around every crevice of the boat this winter doing projects and these guys here have been great helping me through it. Let us know what you have questions about. I don’t know of any inherent issues with the 52. MANs can be expensive to maintain, make sure to check your local area and see if you have a good MAN repair person. If not then that might be something to consider as most anywhere you can find someone to work on a Cummins.

I also just purchased last year. The main Cummins issue is the hi temp exhaust. There is a 500/520 thread on here.

You’re welcome to PM me as well.

Definitely look out for the wood laminate inside the boat delaminating.

Yes, good point. This is an issue on some of them. Mine has alot of the edges on the cabinetry peeling. One of the items I will have to deal with next winter layup.

You guys are right in that this model came in both engine configurations, Cummins and MAN, and ran great on each. QSM-11's around 770hp or MAN's in-line 6, 800hp. Obviously the MAN had the power and torque to pull your house off its blocks but the question is service availability in your area. I just spoke with a gentleman considering purchasing a Big Ray with MAN engines and as began my spiel, he cut me short and told me his business was heavy equipment, and he would be doing the maintenance on the MAN's himself.....damn near brought a tear to my eye, my new Hero. This boat also ran just fine with the Cummins as well.
It was a 500, a 520 and a 52. Huge change in cockpit arrangement halfway through its life. What I loved about that boat was the walkways around the railing. Now days, boat designers want to capture as much interior room as possible, therefore reducing the safety of walking around the outside. This Yacht, you can run around...at any age. Great Boat!

We really liked the cockpit change that came in 2008 (including the bigger bunk beds) and held out. Wife loves the walkways too.

I have the QSM 11s, and that feels like more than enough power.

I agree. We are looking forward to all the space the updated cockpit has to offer.

Now that we updated everything maybe we’ll sell and hunt a 2010. Wife loves the cockpit layout also. Damn!,,,

Joe, you could always buy a 58....more room all around. Maybe I’ll suggest that to Martha next time I see her....

I am currently looking at older 480’s and have heard various opinions on MAN vs Cats. Both taking some criticism, thoughts? Also, any candidates of nice boats under $300k appreciated, Thank you!
