Looking for some advice

It's more like contaminates (carbon, oxidation etc.) that strip down the integrity of the base oil and can act like a mild acid. I am speaking from a two stroke diesel perspective, but the same exist's for all engines. It's not a wives tale, it's real. But you need to understand it isn't fast acting, but it does exist and will shorten the life of your engine.
Yeah, over a period of years and years. But to a new boater, who just put his life savings down on a boat, it makes for a long winter thinking about how your engine will blow up in the spring because the oil wasn't changed in the fall. Been there. :)

Yeah, talking engine life, years but not years and years, just years. I highly doubt anyone would think that not changing your oil in the fall one year would destroy an engine. I think your being a bit dramatic new boater or not. JMO.

I guess it depends on on OCD you are. Like I said, couldn't change the oil one year and I was bothered by it all winter. But frankly, in all my years on the boating interweb, I have yet to hear of an engine crapped out because they changed the oil in the spring instead of the fall. The change itself I think is what is normally neglected.
