Looking for Raymarine Open Array Scanner. Doesn't have to be HD, hoping to spend less than what a new one would go for. I don't mind if it's a few years old, as long as it turns! Thanks!

Are you replacing the one you have? Are you using this with the Raymarine R41XX Display?

make me an offer! it is a 97 and it works.

jaywoodz,

I see you are from Chester, VA. That looks like Jordan Point Marina in your photo. Have you called Marine Electronics of Hartfield? They have used electronics. It's all in the timing.

I just ordered an HD dome so I'll be taking down my 4 foot Raymarine Open Array when the weather starts to warm to do the replacement. Installation has to wait until the shrink wrap comes off, of course.

I'll sell it to you.

It's in good shape and runs like radar should run. My boat is a 2004 and I'm the second owner. I'm not sure if the radar was installed when the boat was first built or if it is a newer system that was added more recently. I purchased the boat this past Oct.

Anywho... not sure what it's worth b/c I haven't done any research on it but if you're willing to wait until March, it'll be up for sale...and if we agree upon a price now, it'll be yours!

Ping me if you're interested.

Why are you removing an open array to put in a dome? HD or not, target separation will not be nearly as good on a dome as an open array? Beam width has to be much larger on the dome than the array (which is a bad thing when talking radar). Just interested in the decision.

Hi Tom,

Well, I have me told that the 24in dome will give me sufficient target separation along with clearer target identification. I also like the idea of color for radar overlay.

Do think you think I've been told incorrectly? Am I wasting my money doing this upgrade? If so, I think I might still be able to return the 24in HD dome.

Thanks for asking the question and initiating the conversation.

Well look at the specs but since you boat is a 2004 I will assume the radar unit is a 2004. Beam width is what give you target separation. Look at the specs for each for beam width. The "thinner" the beam, the better separation. I agree that the processing ability and speed may be higher in the dome since it is new and a HD but not sure it will be a better radar unit. I guess it depends on what you are trying to do with the radar as well. It may turn out to be a wash. You are basically cutting your radar antenna in half, going from a 4' open array to a 2' dome. Not really sure, was asking as I thought maybe Raymarine told you the dome would be much much better than the open array from 2004 to the new domes.

You make an excellent point. The service manager at my marina told me I'd be much, much happier with the HD even with a 24" dome compared to a 2004 48" open array. I didn't buy the unit from him but he certainly would have been happy to sell it to me :)

I need to do some more research based on your points. I appreciate your comments.

Before you spend all this money getting a new array. Did you read about the adjustments in the radar, turning the gain down a little, using the sea clutter and rain clutter adjustments and tuning properly. Im just throwing this out there because I have seen users who think more gain equals more contacts and that is far from the truth.

Can you describe this in more detail in the "Getting the most from your radar" thread under the electronics Q&A forum? You're the first to talk about this.

Thanks.
Jim

I'll so that now, Jim. Thanks.
