Searching...
We keep our 240 Sundeck on the Housatonic in Shelton CT and have been exploring LI Sound from there with trips to Port Jeff (and the dunes), Charles Island, Norwalk and of course all the spots on the river. We are looking where we might be able to pull up to a beach or anchor close to a nice beach or sandbar. I have searched and searched all over the net and asked around at the marina but we have not found anywhere like that yet. We always have our 2 year old son with us plus friends with young kids so that is why I say "family stuff"!

Most of the Connecticut coast is rock... That being said have you checked out the Norwalk islands and over in Westport there is Cockenoe Island that has some nice beach area. Without traveling to far to say Northport or further east to Clinton those would be the places that come to mind.

Good luck!

thanks for the info. how close can you get to the beach at cockenoe island? how is it navigating around there? i am going to do some googling!

Ella,
We are down the river from you at Caswell Cove. We recently had a great trip to Mattituck, Long Island. The inlet has a great anchorage, a fantastic pool for the kids and a nice little town to walk. The ride was only 1 hour 10 min mouth to mouth. Try it out.

Speaking of rocks have you explored the Thimble islands? Nice day trip, swim and spend the day on a mooring.

cockenoe island is easy to get to. You will be able to get right up to the beach. Just watch the tide charts. If you raise your out drive, no problem. Lots of families there.
There is a reef from where you are approaching. Keep an eye on the charts.

You can nose in to the beach at the point after you make the turn. This is a good beginners landing to Cockenoe island. Just be sure to keep her a float.

Thanks for that info! Sounds like I definitely need to check out Mattituck!

I have not but have thought about it many times but the stories of the rocks have kept me away! Need to look closer at that one!

very helpful! thanks much! may be heading there this weekend as long as the weather is good.

Please note that Charles Island 9and Duck Island in Westbrook) are closed to landing by the CT DEP. These islands are closed during the summer due to nexting birds.

Cockenoe is open.

Is Napatree and Sandy point too far???? Just up the coast from Mystic...great beach area to pull up to

yeah, we anchor at Charles Island a lot - never go on shore though!

probably a little too far for us - would probably want to find a place to stay overnight for that one (hotel or camping) but i would definitely love to head up that way some time.
