I am looking of a mechanic that is familiar with the Detroit 71 engines. Anyone know anyone near the Baltimore area?

Well I don't think I need one at the moment (I hope), and I was asking "just in case" I need to if I fail to fix the problem.

The problem I am having is that my port engine does not start. It only starts if I push the solenoid (run solenoid?) plunger in which is attached to the governor, I believe. How often do these things go bad? I assume the solenoid is bad but I will also test the voltage. If the voltage is low or non-existent, where do these wires run to? Hopefully I am on the right track and will get this thing to run.

The solenoid you are refering to is designed to shut off the fuel at the governor to stop the engine. When energized it opens the governor so fuel will flow. I think you are on the right track. See if there is power to the solenoid when the key is energized. If so the solenoid is bad if not you'll have to do some wire chasing. I am not that familar with your model boat so unless there is a fuse between the key switch and solenoid it's time to search.

Problem fixed! Solenoid was not engaging all the way for some reason but replacing it fixed that. Now it starts up just fine :smt038
