Looking for Captain recommendation to assist with delivering a Sundancer 38 from around Tarpon Springs to Home Port Marina. Will also need to learn to dock in close quarters. Must have captains license, and appropriate insurance for the tasks at hand. While I am experienced with single engine IO's and inboards, this will be my first twin V-drive vessel. Controls are DTS, not separate shifters on left and throttles on right.

Thanks!

Personal recommendation from here would be best. If there is anyone that has a personal recommendation.

If you don't get input here, try MarineMax in the area - they will have a list licensed Captains that are independent contractors who could check you out on the boat and help out.

Also, if you were happy with the person who did your survey, ask them. They should know of some options.

Is this an insurance requirement for you to get some time with a licensed captain?

My first time on my boat was the first time I had ever operated something larger than 30'. I have 4 days of travelling to figure it out.

From Tarpon to Palm Harbor is not very far. Why not do it yourself and learn on the way. Just go slow.

Ask your surveyor. They usually know captains. In fact, my surveyor was a licensed captain.

You are looking to do the right thing. Better to have an experienced skipper to help show you the ropes. Going from one engine to two is actually easier to maneuever, but you have to think differently. You should be able to dock and maneuver around your marina without even using the steering wheel. This takes practice, and you won't be comfortable your first time out.

My dealer provides a day of on water training when you buy a boat and this is invaluable.

I would be willing to help you although I don't have a capt license but have many years on the water. That is also my home waters and grew up there and still boat there. My boat is kept on the Anclote river.

Thanks all. This is not an insurance requirement, just me being thorough and complete. I don't want to be pulling into a new port, in a new vessel, with nice crosswind and not have a full understanding of docking, etc... there are a lot of expensive vessels, all parked very close together :)

The surveyor reference idea is great, unfortunately the vessel and surveyor are currently in the northeast.

Same here. We run down that way at least every other month and spend the weekend in Tarpon or Caladesi.

Kevin27, how far up the Anclote do you have to run until you get to fresh water?

I am very confident I could help you. No charge, I love being on the water and like helping people go boating.

K9 I am at Anclote Harbour marina about half way up the river. To get to fresh water you would need to go pretty far up the river. I would say at least would be east of hwy 19. It's farther than my boat can go.

Good luck WannaBoat! Sounds like you guys are going to have fun. We just came back from a Legion 273 luncheon cruise at the American Legion in Madiera Beach. I'd join in with you guys if we were docked nearby. Griff4

Try calling the Yacht Center for Marine Max in Gulfport. Ask for Captain Brad. He's their Master Captain and is excellent both with boats and customers. Tell him Perry sent you.
