Still Enjoying the euphoria of joining the boating community with my 2005 215 Weekender. Doing minor cosmetic upgrades to make the boat aesthetically pleasing and more my taste.
Already ordered a new steering wheel. I would like to replace the throttle control also to something more attractive. (I think the oem steering and throttle control I have are FUGLY).

How hard is it to change the throttle controls on these boats. Am pretty good at DIYs but wouldn't want to mess anything up if it is too difficult.

Will this throttle control work as a replacement for me?

I’m not sure if it’s compatible, as in plug-in-play or not. The unit your looking at seems more bulky with the external box than the 4000 Gen II we currently have.

That link is for an outboard powered boat.

Thanks guys. Can anyone guide me to a relatively non-expensive throttle control that might fit my boat?
Just something more updated to the eye.

That throttle control looks to be a Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) type. Given your vintage, you probably need a conventional shift cable one.

It’s not a difficult job, but it is time intensive and requires some knowledge to get the settings right. Most folks replace the throttle and shift cables at the same time and it does take some time and swearing to get the old ones out and the new ones fished in. I had a bad shift cable and looked into replacing everything and it would have been north of a boat buck to have it done.

I decided that I could armor all the shifter, replace the bad shift cable, and put in a fusion radio with ant remotes for less than half the cost of a new shifter.

Truthfully, you're money is probably better spent elsewhere. Throttle controls are what they are. You probably won't find anything plug and play for your year/model, so you're asking for an installation challenge. If what you have is properly functioning, keep it.

If you want to bling it up, get a new handle. I ordered Mercruiser 879244T13 which is a new handle assembly but chrome on the bottom.

edit: see below, do not use.

Actually scratch that. If your throttle is a thumb grip, this pistol grip will not work…

Thanks Guys.
I will take the advice to not change it if I can't find something that's plug and play.
But I honestly won't mind upgrading just the handle if possible. That should give it a different look.

That's a pretty simple set up and in the same camp as most. If it isn't broke don't fix it.

If it ever does break or needs replacing you have one of the simplest ones to remove and replace with great access through your side storage areas from front to back. Just watch for those dam fiberglass splinters reaching up into those location.

Kind of relaxed on changing the throttle controller. But I still have an itch cause the OEM really bothers me.
Stumbled upon this video on YouTube. This is a 2006 215 Weekender with a much nicer throttle controller.
So I did some research and found out that the nicer throttle control is OEM from 2006 and UP Weekenders.

Part # for 2005 is 1754390 while Part # for 2006 and up is 1754392.
Only difference is the 2005 is "pistol grip" by description.

Does anyone know if it is interchangeable with a 2005 weekender?

I've been reading about it. I believe ours are interchangeable with the 'cables'. They're both 4000's. One is a thumb grip (earlier) and the other newer, is a pistol grip. Unfortunately, the handles aren't interchangeable so you would have to purchase the whole unit, re-splice and attach the cables which may need adjusting.

Thanks. I will do it and report back in case anyone has similar interest. Will probably be after the season and the boat is out of the water.

Just an update in case anyone ever gets interested in this.
Went over it with my Local Marine shop we found that the handles can be changed as everything else is exactly the same.
Ordered the part. Should arrive tomorrow so we 'll see.
Will update with progress.

Throttle arrived.
Much prettier.
i hope it’s plug n play as per diagram.
will update with progress. .
