in Ft.Myers to rent a boat when I take my family down to visit my parents. Anyone have one they've done business with and suggestions for a day trip. I'm thinking Sanibel and Captiva but have never run a boat on the ocean...advice is welcome.

Ft. Meyers is on the Calahoochie river, your several miles out to the Gulf of Mexico.

Headed west from Ft. Meyers, you will find the ICW marked on the charts. Long stretch that you can spend time (days or weeks) along that segment of the ICW.

Sanibel, Captiva, you could go up to Punta Gorda. Lots of options without ever going into the open Gulf of Mexico.

There are several places to rent. Two that come to mind are Cape Harbor and Port Sanibel Marina.

If you looking for a destination, Tween Waters Inn on Captiva has a great restaurant and a courtesy dock. There is an island North of Captive ironicly called North Captiva that is only accessable by boat. Most of it is a preserve and the beaches are great for shelling. I swam there from Captiva as a kid. There is also Cabbage Key, a small island with a house that holds the Cabbage Key inn. They have a marina with a walk way to the restaurant. Cool little place. FWIW. I can tell you alot about Captiva and Sanibel but almost nothing about Ft. Meyers except it is the winter home of the Red Sox, I think.

We have been down there many times. We have rented small boats from several places, the latest being Cape Coral Boat Rental. They are able to deliver the boat to almost anywhere nearby (for a small fee) at reasonable rates. I have also rented from Tween Waters and from South Seas. All of them have small boats, center consoles and deck boats. If you want a real adventure, try Southwest Florida Yachts. They have trawlers that you can live aboard and really explore the area.

For some ideas on destinations, take a look at this thread: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/70108-Enjoying-Sanibel-and-Captiva-Florida?highlight=Sanibel

we love going to Cabbage Key, Barnacle Phil's on North Captiva, Tween-Waters and South Seas.

We have used swf yachts before. Good people.

I heard they consolidated over at burns cabin.

Thanks guys...funny thing is I've been to Sanibel a bunch...honeymooned at Southseas Plantation on Captiva...my parents have had a place down there for 25 years. Been to Tween Waters by car...gonna be fun to meander around by water.

They moved from Marinatown in North Fort Myers to Tarpon Point Marina.

What a small world. My wife and I honeymooned at Southseas as well. Must be a midwest thing.

Remember to keep an eye on the depth. The water can get skinny quick outside of the channels.
