Looking at a 1979 24' Sea Ray and is cuddy with stove, frig, head and all that. So is this just guessing the SRV model? This would be my first Sea Ray and at my age probably last boat. I have not looked at it in person not close by so doing my research before going. It is very nice reason been in storage for many years from my understanding. They have had it all gone over and replaced rubber and stuff what really worries me. Has the monomatic head which I know nothing about. Has the 350 engine and so any thoughts on purchasing a 79 and what would be real concerning and should look at when looking at it? Thank you for any help and information that you can provide.

Don't know much about that boat, but as with any 40 year old boat, look for water damage to the floor, transom, and stringers.

If they recently replaced all of the rubber (boots, bellows), that's a good thing!

Best of luck and welcome to CSR!

How do you check transom make sure it is okay? The stringers and floor you are just checking for soft spots correct? Thanks

Google 1979 SRV240 Weekender. We owned a brand new 1979 260 Express which had a taller cabin than the Weekender. Build quality was the same for these boats until you reached 30 feet. The bigger boat was marginally better in terms of quality. They were all primative by current standards. The stringer tabs were usually not attached to the hull in several places giving you the impression that the hull was somwhat racked, but that's the way they came from the factory.
Regarding the head. You added blue perfumed deodorant to a little water in the bowl. After using the head, you pushed a button and the blue water moved around the bowl to deodorize the contents. After a day or two you pumped out the holding container and added fresh water and chemicals.
These boats leaked like a sieve if you were sleeping on them in a thunderstorm. When that happened you would get soaked in the v birth. If you were under the aft canvas, you got even wetter.
The mechanicals on a 1979 boat are going to be pretty much worn out unless they were replaced by a competent mechanic. Expect to spend a lot of time fixing things.
We bought our boat at a boat show and enjoyed it for 7 years. We put nearly 4000 hours on it and cruised all over Lake Michigan on it. It was trouble free for the most part and we only spent money on it for gas and maintenance. In 1979 the 26 cost $19,000. We sold it for $17,000 in 1987. The 24 is a smaller version of the 26.
Here is a pic of the 26.

Moisture meter and soft tapping hammer. Good luck with your boat search. The late 70's SR were beautiful boats to me. I really like that 260 picture. JC

If this is your first boat I would have a marine surveyor give it a good going over. If they find a lot of problems, which isn't unlikely on a 40 year old Boat, (I know, mine is a 72) then the cost of the survey will save you a bundle. If they say it is a good with a few problems then you'll have a list of what needs to be fixed, and a good tool to negotiate a lower price. Normally I wouldn't recommend a professional survey on a 26 foot boat but considering it's age, and your own lack of knowledge, you should.

This boat has been in storage since the 90's and looks wonderful. Looks to have been stored very nicely and say have been gone over and things replaced and good to go. Has very low hours 440 but is the storage time something that I should stay away from or still take a look at it. Was not outside stored. Thanks

Looks can be deceiving. It most likely needs to have the transom replaced. The plywood around the lower unit is probably rotted, although years in storage might result in normal moisture readings. Percussion will give you a better picture of what is going on there. Just be aware, there will be issues when the boat is returned to service.

That is what worries me usually storage is not good for anything. I thought might get a surveyor out but not sure what they cost but in the end not sure worth whatever the cost and just keep looking. Problem is in the price range I want to be not sure the right boat is out there...LOL
Thanks
