Anyone got any cool plans on the northern Chesapeake this weekend? Some friends and I are trying to figure out where to go and what to do...thinking maybe Chester River? Wye River? Sasafrass? Basically my mind is all over the place hoping for a good weekend with no sailboat weather (really windy e.g., the last three weekends seems like).

Flettis, some people are heading for Fairlee Creek; are you within reach? I'm not sure of dates/times, but perhaps someone else can provide details. I think it's BYOF/drink, but that's all I know about the details. If you've never been to Fairlee, it's tricky getting in there, but worth the effort!

Yeah, that is an option, fairlee is fairly close and lots of fun. Who is going?

We are planning on going and I believe xravenx is as well. I got the impression there would be many others, but I'm waiting to hear the details from xravenx.

Unfortunately we are going to be out of town this weekend, but last year we went to the Chestertown Tea Party. It's a re-enactment of the 1774 Tea Party held in supoprt of Boston in the wake of British retaliation for their Party. The sailing ship Sultana participates, and there is a street festival, music, vendors, etc. Lots of fun. Chestertown is also rich in history, and their walking tour of the local architecture is fascinating.

We stayed at Chestertown Marina, which had reasonable rates and very friendly slipmates. There's more info at www.chestertownteaparty.com.

We may head up to Fairlee this weekend as we are looking for places to visit we haven’t been to. My best guess to get there is to head up to green #31 and then straight to #2F and look for the entrance markers. Any tips from others on how to best navigate the entrance?

Jim... there's no need to go all the way to 31. You can follow the channel until R26, G27 and then leave the channel for Shell Point (the point that protects the opening of Fairlee Creek). You want to give the point some room, but no need to go crazy, there's plenty of water (see the chart for the area). Then you want to head towards 2F where you will pick up the well marked channel into Fairlee.

Remember your "Red, Right, Returning / Green Port on Entry" because the channel takes you VERY close to the beach and the temptation is to think the markers are telling you to stay away from the beach where in fact they are telling you to stay in between the markers and the beach. Then you'll get to the mouth of the creek (about 10-15' off the beach) where you will need to make a 90 degree turn to starboard. If the current is running (which it can be), the turn can be interesting. It's really not that big a deal, but if you've never done it, it can be unnerving (particularly with spectators on the beach who have been known to hold up number signs to indicate how they feel about your performance). The main warning is to be sure that you don't find yourself in the midst of the turn at the same time as someone else. I always assume the other guy isn't paying attention!

It's a nice place and the negotiation of the entrance is not that big a deal. You'll most likely be following someone into the creek anyway!

Have fun!

Prodigal,

Thanks for the tips. It’s always good to have some local knowledge and with this info we will shoot for a 9 or 9.5 on our entry.

BTW, we did take a sightseeing cruise around Rock Hall and could not believe how close this actually is. (Got there from Castle Harbor in under 30 min.) Will return to sample the crabs at Waterman’s although the floating docks look like they could use some work, but then they must be part of the overall ambiance of the place.

That's why they only let you stay at the floating docks for a few hours...

Yea, follow the boat in front of you, Just kidding, it is a little tricky on your first time. I was there Sunday and the channel is very well marked compared to past years. When you make the right turn thru the cut you will be very close to the beach, and if the tide is running you will have to give it a little gas.

Hey Debfinder................many boats from our club are going to Fairlee this weekend, along with some friends of friends. It is shaping up to be a heck of a raft off. If any of you guys want to hook up, just hail "Michele Ann" on 68 and I will guide you in. As far as food and drink, you are pretty much on your own, there is a restuarant on shore along with a bar on the beach that serves lunch...................hope to see some of you guys.

John...............Debfinder, I will PM you later today.

Sounds like Fairlee is going to be a hoppin'! My crew is angleing towards Still Pond, but I'll see if we can make a detour! Is anyone going to try to claim the spit at Fairlee?

John,

I had only been at Fairlee Creek twice before and never with the crowds we saw there Saturday. Finally found a place the wife wants to go back to. I saw the Michelle Ann on my way in but was leading a friend in and didn't think I should divert off course to yell hi.
Did you stay there the weekend or commute?

Greg, I spent the whole weekend, came back on Monday. I met "Glory Days", he has a very nice boat! We had a great raft off. Overall a good weekend, even weathered the two storms without any problems.
