Long Island Destinations-August Boat Trip

Cod, I would think with a Southwest wind it wouldn't be too bad, NO? If not what direction should I hope for, and usually winds in August are fairly light.

Rocket, thanks for the contact, do you make reservations for the town dock? And besides price is there really that much of a difference?

Yes you need to make reservations at the town dock. There is no real differance than staying at SHYC.

Jon,

Alex's post is a perfect example of conditions you "possibly" could encounter. Ideally, as you know you want light winds. If your lucky enough, you would want a NE to ENE wind. Try and keep your schedule a little flexible so you can make changes if necessary....mainly due to bad weather. I usually travel leaving early in the morning when the winds are typically lighter and tend to pick up in the afternoon.

All great points guys, much appreciated. Knowing that taking the LI Sound vs the Atlantic is only 15NM more, would that be a better choice? With regards to water and view.

Jon,

Let me put it to you this way. Ask yourself this question, what's your primary goal? You'll be cruising in prime season. You're covering prime ports. When you leave a port, is it about getting from point A to point B or is it about maximizing the overall experience for the whole crew, especially your parents? Regardless how many times you transited NYC by water, it's always a site
to see. Besides, protected water, great view of the LIS, NYC, Statue of Liberty, Verrazano Br area, I'm positive that everyone aboard will appreciate this MUCH more in exchange for 15NM extra. In addition, if things get uncomfortable, you'll have tons of bailout points. Hugging the Jersey shoreline will also provide some level of the protection in SW winds. Of course, anything with northern component will help. You just can't compare this to a 5-6hrs ride with nothing in site but ocean water.

If you were shooting straight for Cape May, that would be a different story and I'd say go from MYC directly to CM.

Jon, I just found this post as we are considering cruising LI Sound this July instead of Chesapeake. Regarding your question about South Jersey Marina, that's our favorite marina in Cape May. No pool, but it's a deep water marina and there is something intangibly spectacular about it. There will usually be several 100+ footers there in summer which makes it all the more exciting. Our kids love going there and choose it over their sister marina a few miles away, the Canyon Club. CC is full of large/huge sport fishing boats and has one hell of a nice pool overlooking the marina. Yet the kids always choose SJ Marina over CC. Downtown Cape May itself is among the most charming towns you'll ever visit.

James,
We really enjoy Cape May, its such a great spot. I've stayed at Utsch Marina and really and wanted SJ Marina a try. Its neat to see the floating houses across the water. What destinations are you stopping at in LI Sound?

So far this season we have Montuak, Greenport, Northport, Mattituck, Block Island, and Port Jeff quite a few times on our agenda. We are doing mostly weekends and long weekends. Anymore suggestions? I think next year we will do the Nantucket, Cuttyhunk and MV run.
