on my 2001 460 DA I have what I am almost sure is a Lofrans Progress 1 Windlass. one of the studs that holds the main wires on the motor is broken off so I am attempting to remove it and see if I can have it rebuilt. I cannot get this dang thing off! I have removed the electrical, removed the 4 bolts underneath I can see, removed the Capstan all all associated hardware...except, I cannot get the final part off the shaft, it will turn, but not come up off the shaft, can anyone help?

Thanks

Josh

Well I hired it done. Had the motor rebuilt and the stud replaced. And it's back to working perfect. 200 bucks

Oh it was really easy. I gave him 100 bucks and it was apart! Really though he left the shaft and took it apart from the bottom.

I can ask if you need more details.

Does anyone know offhand how to get it disassembled this far? I need to replace the pressure finger spring.

This is my windless. Progress 1 - Old style base. I believe the OP has the new style base or a different model. The bolt my finger sits on is 8mm threaded stock. It screws into the base. The new style is a post with a set screw to hold it in place.

Remove the cover (Blue Circle) by using the handle that fits in the top of the windlass (Blue Arrow). When you crank it counter clockwise it loosens the clutch. Make sure to have your anchor secured. It will free-fall into the water. Mine came off still attached to the handle.

Remove the red hex screws. The cover pulls off along with something below it that looks like a tuning fork.

Lift the whole assembly (Blue Circle) straight up and set it to the side.

Replace the finger spring and put it all back together.

If anybody finds a place to get a new finger let me know or send me a link. I switched to mostly chain it works find but if I pay out some rope not so much.

The finger kits for the Progress 1 are no longer available. Haven't been for some time.

You'd probably need to upgrade to a newer windlass, or switch over to all-chain rode.

Also for the Project 1000. Seriously, we are talking about the Progress 1 which is a different windlass, and it's not available. No really, it just isn't :)

The good news (sort of) is that the Project 1000 windlass is pretty close to a drop-in replacement for the old Progress 1. Just a minor mounting hole enlargement required, as I understand it.
It's the other way. I have a Project 1000 replacement of a previous Progress 1. There is a mounting starboard plate that comes with it that covers the old hole and the Project 1000 sits on top of that. On my boat, the bolts for the Project 1000 were barely long enough for the depth of the new mounting plate and the thickness of the Sea Ray deck. I ended up replacing the tall nylon locking nuts with lower profile nuts (the nylock nuts would not thread far enough to reach the locking nylon, so they vibrated loose over time) and lock washers. The bolt ends are now even with the end of the nut when fully tightened. There are no extra threads hanging out, though.

This is good to know. Thanks. I'm thinking of replacing my Progress 1 with a Project 1000 as well, because wear parts are no longer available. Are the bolts that come with the Project 1000 specialized, or could one simply get longer bolts from a hardware store?

That I can't answer. The previous owner made the swap. The bolts may be fixed into the windlass and not replaceable. Best to call Lofrans. I replaced the nylock nuts when I found two on the floor of the anchor locker, one hanging on by one thread turn and only the fourth one actually far enough into the nylon for the nut to stay in place. I used the windlass regularly for months in this condition. I got lucky. I figured out I had a problem when I saw the windlass move and then when I could move it by hand.
