I have a strange thing that just started today...if I turn on the breaker for the windlass, it wants to continually pull the rode and chain up as if pulling it out of the water. The only way to stop it is to turn the breaker off. Right now it is stuck in the up position and will not alow me to let out any chain or rode. It seems like something electrical...I have changed the switch thinking that may have gone bad but get the same results. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!!

You have a solenoid stuck somewhere.

The switch sends a little bit of power to the solenoid, which turns on a greater amount of power to activate the windlass.

It's probably either in the back near the battery switches or up front in the anchor locker. It will be slightly smaller than a beer can, have two large battery cables and two small control wires hooked up to it. There should be two right next to each other. One for up, one for down.

You have two solinoide one latch up which powers your windlass the second is your reversing solinoide which the switches make connections to one side for lifting the other for releasing and lowering. The latch up is usually in the ER the reversing is usually in the rode locker near the windlass there are usually 3 wires one common the other up the other down good luck

To Magstang 1 and Mainstream...thank you so much for your response! Is fixing it a matter of replacing it or is there some kind of adjustment or something similar like a bump with a hammer to make it work correctly? Maybe just checking the connections?

Hello you usually need to replace the reversing solinoide if it stays latched in one direction

So I went to the anchor locker and found the solenoid...I checked connections and kind of just tinkered around a bit. Then went to switch the breaker on and at it did not keep running like it wanted to pull in the rode and chain...good news I thought. That is until I found that now the switch on the helm will only let it out and will not take it back in. I am confused! Could it be that the solenoid is no longer stuck and that maybe it is the switch after all?

Maybe it's stuck in the off position now.

This may take two people. Use a volt meter at the solenoid while someone else presses the button at the helm. If you get voltage on the small wires then your switch is fine.

I'm guessing the solenoid is done.

I had the exact same thing with mine - would work going out, but not up. Found the chain had caught on a wire bundle and pulled a small control wire off of the windlass solenoid in the locker. Simple fix for me.

I am having issues with my windlass. It clicks and I found solenoid behind switches on dash. Getting 12 volts on one side (to it) and 10 to 11 volts to windlass. The two 5 amp fuses are good. Bad solenoid? I could not find the one in engine room. I have 1998 330 sundancer, any pictures of location would help. Thank you.
