I want to check and adjust if necessary the timing on my engine. Because it is a 3.0 with Digital Electronic Ignition System, I have to follow some special procedures before I check with a timing light. One of which is to remove some wires on the shift interrupt switch and tie them together temporarily. Can someone give me a good description (or photo?!) of what this shift interrupt switch looks like and where I might look for it?

My boat has had the symptom of "running on" when the ignition is turned off when it is warmed up. It will sputter and cough for a couple of seconds before stopping. I'm hoping the timing is just off some. It's annoying when starting and stopping often when tubing or sking. Nor can it be good for the engine anyway...

Thanks,

Tom

Unless it has moved on new engines look where the throttle cable, shift cable and the cable to the throttle lever come together on the engine, it should be right there. It may have changed with electronic ignition.

I know its been a while but this is for anyone new out there with the same problem. The shift interrupt switch is on the top of the motor. I has a metal arm that bends when you push the throttle. I believe when you check the timing you actually connect two white wires on the drivers side of the motor (not the shift interrupt switch cables). This modifies the timing of the motor for you to be able to check the timing.

As for the running on of the motor, I was having the same problem and was told to upgrade the grade of the fuel that I use. I now use mid-grade to premium and no longer have the problem.
