Living Large on the Water -- 2011 Season

Beautiful area. I have never been to the great lakes. I notice a lot of people are swimming. What is the typical water temp in the summer?
The areas I'm familiar with, roughly mid 70's. In the "flats" of Lake St. Clair, 80's are common.

Lake St. Clair is truly amazing! The northern part is actually a delta, which is fed by Lake Huron via the St. Clair River. There are literally 100s of acres of waist deep, sandy bottom areas. These are among the warmest waters, and not surprisingly, are very popular.

Note people wading throughout at the 2011 "Raft Off".

I am going to make an observation here that others on this site probably already know; boaters in the midwest and east coast are more passionate about getting on the water and actually using their boats. I realize the limited season is probably the main reason. In my marina in so-cal of about 300 boats, there are approximtely 10% active users. Other's come down to use their boat as an overnight condo, but rarely leave the dock.

I agree on the enthusiasm and season length, and also factor in the weather. We have so much grey weather over the next few months, sunny days around here rarely go unappreciated.

While there certainly are plenty around here who do not frequent their boat every weekend, that cannot be said of me. April through October, I didn't miss one single weekend. And, most of the time am not at my marina either.

I agree that when we are in SoCal there are sooooo many sweet boats that just sit ini the harbors. I see it in the bay are too but not to the extent I do in SoCal. The group we cruise with are very active and get out on the water at the drop of a dime!
