Please help me figure this out . When I'm on my motorcycle it scares the hell out of me to pass someone on the right hand lane. You never know if the driver after driving in the passing lane for ten minutes will come back to the slow lane about the time I'm going to pass them. Why do people drive in the passing lane at the posted speed or slower. Is it the tree hungers forcing me to save fuel to save the plant? Don't even get me started about the people that pull out in front of you to drive down the road for less then a mile to make a turn.

You have touched a nerve here, my #1 pet peeve. It's hard to tell if it's ignorance or intentionally offensive, but who the heck doesn't know the left lane is for passing?

When you're on a motorcycle, you never know what any driver is going to do, period.... right lane, left lane, oncoming, etc. you just have to keep your head on a swivel and SEE (scan, evaluate and execute). I'm always especially looking for texters and seems like one out of every 5-6 drivers does something that's textbook texting behavior such a slow drift across the line, the quick wheel jerk, or the head bob as they look down, look up, look down. I don't try to be an annoying rider but I will rap my throttle to help let the driver know I'm around.

Defensive driving becomes more important when you're on a bike because things can happen so quickly and you have very little protection. I rode for many years and was never hit by a car or truck, but there were some close calls.

"Left Lane Campers" is one of my pet peeves. In WA (and likely other states) it's against the law to continuously drive in the left lane IF it impedes the flow of faster moving traffic. Also, it's illegal to drive in the left lane on roads with two lanes or more in the same direction unless passing another vehicle.

" Loud Pipes Saves Lives". The biggest problem today is the inattention. These GD phones are a huge cause of accidents I believe. I have one and hate mine but it has become a necessity. I don't know why. Business worked for years before they were invented.

I still have my first cellphone, the battery is going bad on it, I'm thinking of going without...fck it, if you want to talk to me then call me when I'm home.

Loud pipes annoy the hell out of people trying to enjoy the peace. Just like thru-hull exhaust. Deluding yourself to think it improves your safety. It is annoying and selfish.

How about the selfishness of the car driver texting and emailing while driving. I am not deluding myself to anything that brings attention to myself or anyone on a bike. I don't necessarily care for loud obnoxious anything but if it going to wake somebody up as to my presence, so be it. My bikes and cars are within the legal sound limits though a tad louder than stock. Can you say that for the driver who is texting? I am a past MSF instructor.

Personally, I don't care for the noise the ski's in your sig. make. Though legal I find them most annoying.

Crying babies in public annoy the hell out of people trying to enjoy the peace. It's annoying and selfish. I'm sure the little fella in your picture has never made a scene in a public place, right? Those of us who don't have kids would appreciate it if you'd keep him at home so he doesn't disturb our peace and quiet.

Different strokes and all that...live and let live.

A driver illegally using a cell phone should be ticketed. A biker who illegally modifies his exhaust and violates a noise ordinance should be ticketed. People with kids should only go boating or to Disney World. My jet skis exhaust through the water, and are designed to minimize noise. Harley dudes with straight pipes are sad because they feel like their mama's didn't pay them enough attention.

Unless your bike of choice is straight piped V twin or a ricer that's cool but the loud pipe thing will not work to well with my performance chipped BMW K 1200 LT besides some D.a$$ driving in the passing lane could care less that your loud pipes are behind them and you have to pass him on the right.Loud pipes might let a cage driver know your coming if they are sitting still with there windows open if they are paying attention and that's a big if or when your blow by them on the high way. I have friends with loud bikes and they are more sound behind the bike then in front of them.It could have to do with the direction your pipes are pointed .

Just when I start to get frustrated with Left Lane Losers in Michigan, I cross the state line into Ohio and the issue is multiplied 10-fold. I have to say though, many of the southern states are even worse.

I agree that loud pipes negatively affect people who live near roads (that would be everybody) much more than they enhance safety of the rider against an inattentive driver.

It is a dangerous slippery slope to justify your own obnoxious behavior (loud pipes) based on someone else's obnoxious behavior (inattentive driving). Where does it stop?

I must say that discourteous drivers, and distracted drivers are as bad if not worse than drunk drivers in that they are of sound mind and choose to take their attention from the task of driving. More than once I've almost be run off the road by someone texting or just not using common sense in traffic. All the trailer boaters here know what I'm talking about I'm sure. How many times have you had to make some pretty scary manueuvers to avoid some IDIOT that has merged into your lane, taken up your saftey margin between vehicles and then slammed on the brakes because a text message came in and they have to find their phone. That's my rant. I'll sit back and read now Thanks.

This is turning into THREAD rage:wow:

Also my #1 pet peeve. I went so far as to break up with a girl over it. She said "Well they can just go around me". I thought if that was her consideration level, I could see bad things coming between us.

I also firmly believe everyone should have to drive both a motorcycle and a large truck for a few weeks each. That would raise awareness quite a bit.

My favorite- the slow driver in the passing lane.....then moves over to the slow lane and drivers FASTER...

It seems like that's nearly ALL of them! The "why can't they just go around me" mentality is everywhere - they have no concept that the lanes have any distinction, or worse, they think the left lane is the "fast lane." "I'm going exactly the speed limit, so no-one SHOULD pass me."

Living on the western side of Washington state, the same issue happens here. We have folks that will drive the speed limit in the left lane and not move over. The interesting part is we have what my wife and I call "lemmings"- people who will drive in the other two lanes at the speed limit because the person in the left lane is driving the speed limit, so no one can pass anywhere. Granted it is not advisable to pass on the right, but when the person in the left lane doesn't move over, they become an impediment to the traffic flow, thus causing a potential danger to other drivers and the flow of traffic. We had an interesting interaction a few weeks back with one of WA States finest on Whidbey Island on one of our many house searching junkets. We were on RT20 going south and at some areas on the road there are "slow traffic keep right" lanes. Well, we were the only vehicle in the left lane- nothing in front, behind or to the right of us, so we stayed in the left lane - we were doing the speed limit, the wife was driving. You can probably guess where this is going-the gentleman representing the state pulled us over and proceeded to instruct us (politely) that we always need to keep to the right even if there is no traffic that wants to pass and even if we are traveling the speed limit....where is this guy on Interstate 5 when goofball drivers are holding up the traffic flow????
