Little Egg Inlet...Post-Sandy

Came in via LEI on Sunday morning. Well marked, no issues. Piece of cake.

Thanks for posting that. That is great news! I just saw the other day that the Coast Guard pulled the markers because it had gotten so bad over the winter.

Amazing that it has nevery been dredged. I'm guessing they're really only doing it to replenish the beaches. If not for that need, I'm sure it would just stay closed, and passage would be dependent upon local knowledge.

Great news! Now if they would only dredge the ICW between LEI and Atlantic City....Has anyone navigated the ICW between those two points during a low tide in 2016?

This section of ICW has always been tricky. I've been through it many times, but it's never my first choice, but the weather sometimes dictates on choosing this route. One time, about 3/4 of the way heading southbound between LEI and AC, I was passed by a law enforcement boat. As I recall, it was during low tide. A short while later I caught up with them, as they were sitting bone dry in a middle of the channel. I think I made an update in active captain describing the hazard and suggested a safe passage.

I suggest avoiding this section at low tide, if possible. Study the charts very well and most importantly read every single Active Captain hazard marker. Going slow will save the day.

Home port for me is at Beach Haven - just minutes from the LEI.. I run this inlet all the time. Well marked in 2016. At low tide I only experienced 7' depth . Inside btw AC and LEI is another story. I run this only when weather dictates and at that only at High tides.. At High tide - you will see some shallow points within the markers in the 3.6' range.. Also watch out for the sub IWC markers... There are several in the 150 -175 ICW markers. Its absolutely doable....but pay attention !

I hate inlets. I hate shallow water. Why do you people boat in New Jersey when the Chesapeake Bay is so close? :)

You haven't lived until you've run an inlet when the wind and tide are in opposition. Or until your anus puckers up as you watch your sounder go from 11 to 4 feet in a matter of seconds, in the channel. Or until you are cut off by a center console doing 35, as you are trapped in the wake of a 40' Silverton aft cabin that youre trying to overtake dragging his ass at 14 knots, and suddenly spot, emerging from behind a snailbloat towing a beat-ass Zodiac, two pineys in a rented skiff with a 9.9 fishing inside the marker. Oh, and here comes a couple of Starbucks-sipping naturalists in his and hers kayaks! Yeah, good times. You NJ guys know what I'm talking about. Won't be long now. If you can boat here, you can boat anywhere!

Sounds like a typical summer Saturday around here.

You must be on the south shore!

Totally agree. I know a lot of the members of Absecon Island Power Squadron (Atlantic City area) keep their boats in the Baltimore area. I ran aground once in the Little Egg Inlet area and dinged up the props; very costly and inconvenient!

LMAO
If I didn't know better, I'd swear that I typed that comment myself. You just described Atlantic City as it is every single day in the summer!

As for coming down the ICW from LEHT to AC, I saw 2.6 ft. at one point in the middle of the channel at low tide. The radio was very active with so many people calling Sea Tow.

Yes, south shore and primarily boat in the area between the Jones and Fire Island Inlet. Or as I like to refer to it, the sand box.

I ran it in late April last year. I don't think it was quite low tide though. It was passable in my 390, but I only have a 28" draft, and even at that we got close a couple times where you heard the tone of the prop change as it started sucking muck at the edge of the channel.

Sounds like Indian River Inlet, Delaware on most summer days except you left out the fleet of can boats drift fishing the channel and the idiots on stand up paddle boards. I used to think jet skiers and kayakers were bad, then along came the SUP crowd.
