Lindenhurst to Liberty Landing NJ in a 25ft Boat?

Got back yesterday from out Liberty Landing Trip. The trip there and the time spent was great. The trip back was NOT fun....

I know what you mean as it seams to be the case with us quite often.

thinking of doing the trip
which marina did you stay at?
other pertinent info?

I believe we where about 1 hr south of the Verz Bridge. Not sure about the jetty. Learned alot about the boat / Ocean / wife...
Boat: Held up like a champ! Needed to move along at at least 7 to 10 MPH or the Waves would have there way ( more than normal) Got angry felt like "Capt. Dan" (Forest Gump.) Brought it up to 15 mph and the hell with the Noise the 45 % angles up / down...
The Ocean: There was No resting / time outs. it just keeps coming. No Bathroom breaks (Tip: keep empty Snapple bottle around...) I also Could not believe Other people Crazy people out there in even smaller fishing boat. Just Crazy..
Wife?: Takes about an 2 hours of screaming to get tired. Last time in "Ocean" until boat up-grade.
I will spend all the money needed to maintain the boat. If the Engine would of died. Things could of came out much worst...

John,
That sounds like some trip! I'd like to do it next year but I am afraid of......the WIFE!! If we hit anything like you did I think she would never boat again!!! I have to plan carefully & hope for the best!! Glad you made it through OK.

This is funny. It reminds how my wife offered the same when we were coming back from LI. I said " honey, you've got to be kidding me, we're not in our 240. This is a much bigger boat just take the wheel and hold it in place, b/c if we had an autopilot I would just leave it engaged. I'll be just two feet away if you need me". Being a good admiral she took the wheal.

The only real problem I always have leaving the helm is the lobster traps, they popup all over out of no where and sometimes it's very difficult to spot them. So, I still feel more comfortable having admiral at stearing vs. autopilot.

I fixed (well, slightly fixed ) this problem 3 years ago. But, there's lots of room for improvement.

Is this the thread we can talk about those people that think they should take a bow rider from FL to the Bahamas?

I'm going to take my dinghy across to the Bahamas this winter.

You'll save a lot on fuel....LOL.

When I was fueling up that morning the Sun came out the fog was gone, I talked to the Dock Master who was his computer talking about the " Low pressure system" and a "High Pressure system" coming in from the West saying that it was not good but the further East I went it would get better.
I talked to 2 Boat captains that came in from that Direction that I was going go and they said both said that it was pretty rough in a couple of spots but not the bad overall. ( Huh?)
I checked everything of Friday and they called for 1 to 2 ft ( near by Ocean) for the next three days. Now I take full for my actions and obviously need to re-think how I check these things out before ( if) the next time I venture into the ocean and for now its the "Great South Bay" for me...

We had 6 to 8 footers from the Inlet at Manasquan to Cape May. It took us 9 hours from Liberty Landing to Cape May. The boat did fine, I was fine, and the Admiral was fine, at least right up to the time I asked her for something out of the cockpit refrigerator! My daughter on the other hand was hurling over the side.

You could have gone in Manasquan and taken the Intracoastal. It would have saved you some pain not to mention fuel.

You know Vince, that is exactly what I should have done.... I was hoping the seas would turn better the further south we got, well that didn't happen.

Actually my boat was running fine in those seas at about 12 knots, the 28 behind me was taking the beating so I slowed to 8 to keep him in sight.

What was really funny is we had been in rough water for several hours. We left New York at 8am and it is now after noon and I am getting hungry. Now I know we have some Burger chocolate cookies in the cockpit refrigerator. So here we are just a rolling and bouncing along and I ask Sandy to go back and get me one. She looks at me like I had three heads or something and said “are you serious?” I said yea, you got your PFD on! Ok she gets up and makes her way to the back of the boat hanging on to anything that won’t move, and opens up the frig, and bingo everything flies out! She gets the cookies out, and then starts putting everything back in the refrigerator. Now by the time she does all this, the chocolate on the cookies has started to melt, so when she gives me one I am getting the chocolate all over me. I take one bite out of the cookie and throw it overboard….. The look on her face was priceless! Well I had to eat another one completely or I would have been the one going overboard next!

I have found the best way to get the wife (and kids) to throw up in rough seas is to ask her to go make me a tuna fish sandwich... with extra mayo and relish...

That is funny because once we got into the "Inlet" That is the first thing I said is " Whats for Lunch" she said the same thing "Are you serious?"

I think you need to get back on that horse and go for another ride. conquering the fear of death builds character.

I find what works best is to tell them to go down below and read a book.....they always return to the bridge green after that

OK... How about "Go down and read a book and then make me a tuna fish sandwich with lots of relish and mayo... and boil some eggs and grind them up and add that to the tuna fish sandwich."
