Hey, Well the Greenport trip went well so now I am thinking of taking the Boat to Liberty Landing this month ( Sept) I know the Weather & Conditions would have to be good for my size boat ( 25 ft Sundancer ) The part which I am concerned is from the East Rockaway inlet up through the hudson. I fugured around 4 to 5 hours @ 23 MPH. total trip.
Looking for info on the trip and things to look for: Tides / Currents ( where best place for Current info in area) And overall what to look for when planing.
Thanks. John G.

John,

I made the trip last year on my last boat(22 Grady White). I picked a day when the seas were 2 foot or less. I ran out of Jones inlet. It took me about 1.5 hours to get to the Statue of Liberty. We drifted in front on the statue and had lunch.

My wife and I enjoyed the trip.

I will make the trip again with the new boat next year.

Currents really didnt matter to me. Just be careful when you get closer to the city. Lots of debrie in the water.

Good Luck,

Lenny

Sounds good. Your closer than me, so The Trip over sould be quick and you will be able to tell faster about the sea conditons before you leave. JG

I have been out to Jones Beach from NY Harbor a number of times. Often riding a jet ski while following a boat. It seemed like everytime we did that trip we would have nice seas going out (about 1 hour ride) and would get hammered with a 3 to 5 foot, beam sea comming home (3 hour ride).

You should be fine in a 25 footer, but make sure you enough fuel to get home. Don't leave NY Harbor without having at least 1/2 tank of fuel and don't assume you will burn the same amount on the return leg. I don't remember seeing any fuel docks out on the ocean

Where are you moored???

How would that trip be in a boat like mine? Undoable? That would be a very cool day!

Some else more experienced with those water ways will have to answer that :smt001

I should be right in Amitiville I have two spots to pick from amitiville or Bayshore. I have not decided yet but from what i see Amitiville looks like a better spot I could go either west or east from the canal which would you use ?

2010 UPDATE: Lindenhurst to Liberty Landing NJ in a 25ft Boat?

Hey, Going to try this trip again this coming weekend, leave on Friday AM. of course depending on weather. Being my 2nd year boating I fell much better about going into the Ocean. I now have a Radar system which I used when we took our trip to Greenport and hit heavy fog and Heavy Seas going through the Peconic.
Starting to look at the maps today, Picking up my charts later. I guess my first question will be picking the Jones beach or the Rockaway inlets. JG

Jones Inlet is very easy to navigate. As for staying longer on the ICW to RI it depends on the weather and sea conditions. Based on my experience, the seas are usually much calmer early in AM (6-7am) and they they start to wake up around 9am (this is of course very basic observation of a normal day). If you can be out of the inlet no later than 8am you have better chance for smoother ride. When we were heading to LI the forecast was for 3-4 footers with winds 10-15kts. I pupped out of the Manasquan Inlet at 8am and we had a nice ride. As we were getting closer to Jones Inlet the seas conditions were changing.

Anyway, you have to keep a close look at the forecast.

I was looking for other Marinas with NYC views and it looks like Liberty landing Marina is it. There appears to be two different marinas is it easy to get from one to other?

  • Liberty Harbor Marina (Jersey City, NJ) This on the north side of the Morris canal. It is a protected marina, so it's the place to go for calm. There's a fuel dock here, along with a tiki bar and nightclub. Easy walk to trolley, which can take you to PATH train into NYC. Ferry service to NYC (no late nights though) Roughness 2 out of 10.
  • Liberty Landing Marina (Jersey City, NJ) - on the south side of the Morris Canal, but very well protected. Also have fuel dock and restaurant on boat. Easy walk in park to Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty ferry. Showers. 10 minute walk to great diner (5 egg omlettes!) and trolley to PATH train. Ferry service to NYC (no late nights though) Roughness 2 out of 10.

Got back yesterday from out Liberty Landing Trip. The trip there and the time spent was great. The trip back was NOT fun. Friday morning the Weather service said 1 to 2 ft on Friday to Sunday NOT! Portions of the trip back we had 6ft+ waves. On breaker hit the top of my window (Plastic held up.)

HOLY S--T :smt009 Glad you got back ok

The ocean can be scary. Where were you when the big one hit? I am going to guess that it was by the jetty at Breezy Point.
