Ok, I'm reading a book about the Lifesaving Stations along the Eastern Shore. Some of the stations had what is called a "wreck tower"

Can someone explain to me what a wreck tower was used for?

Can someone explain to me what a wreck tower was used for?

I'm surprised the book doesn't explain that. They were lookout platforms, elevated to help see better/farther, they were looking for 'wrecks' and any other situations that could use some help.
