LI Rendezvous - 2012

I will be at this one in lieu of NYC where it will save me two days travel...........

Wet Paint: John (any girl that will come), 2007 36 Sedan Bridge (TBD), 36 L 14 B, 1x50, 3 nights, th/fr/sat, TBD

Got you on the list, John.

Alex we had a great time with you last year, but we are sure if we can make it this time... We will know better by the summer... A lot depends on the price of fuel...

Rod,

I already committed to bringing along some spare fuel for you.....

We sure had a blast, Rod. I hope you and more folks from our local gang can make it. Rudy and others were trying for some time

Hey don't forget me! See what happens when you let a NJ guy organize a LI rendezvous!? Seriously though Alex has done a heck of a job, thanks for starting the thread and organizing Alex, better you than me! Im okay with MYC but there certainly is more than one marina in NE that can accommodate us, I think that's all Todd was saying. Nothing wrong with a little variety, not to mention I think I have a second mortgage at MYC from last year. Mitchell Park Marina in Greenport, Champlins at Block, Saybrook Point in CT or Conanicut in Jamestown there are many places. Whatever you want to do Alex, maybe this year I will have a motor and working GPS to find you! Let me know how I can help.

Hey Russ, good to hear from you. How can we run the Rendezvous without you?

I hope Todd didn't take it the wrong way. It was just a good timing on his part to open himself up for some joking comments. Todd, we were only joking and I think you know that.

You know me, I'm good for any location. If you guys like to change the marina let's do it. I honestly thought that MYC was excellent in many ways, specially for group event. I've been there couple of times and won't ever hesitate to comeback. But, if we have a nice marina in a new location I'm all for it. I actually prefer exploring new places instead of keep coming back to the same place over and over again. As you can see from another thread our AC event was also moved to LLM. This is the reason I've put "Proposed Location" and "Proposed Date" on the first page. Nothing is set in stone at this point. So, if anyone has other suggestions bring it on.

Russ, out of these places you proposed, here are my thoughts:
1. Mitchell Park Marina in Greenport - I know the place but I personally don't think it's worth to spend a weekend there. I remember there were different opinions on Greenport, so I'm just expressing mine.
2. Champlins at Block - I love the Block, but let's be realistic for a group of 15-20 boats it's going to be tough call, specially considering how it gets on the weekends. I don't think that everyone would feel comfortable being rafted (I think 99% we'll have to be) for the weekend. I loved being there on the mooring, but it's not going to work for a large group.
3. Saybrook Point in CT - Have no idea, never been there and will be willing to try if you say it's good.
4. Conanicut in Jamestown - Same as #3.

Is anyone else familiar with these marinas? Let us hear your opinion.

We loved Block so much [thanks to our mooring mates Russ & Marybeth] and the CSR caravan that led us there in our dingy, that we are planning a week there in early / mid August. Would love to connect our trip together with a CSR rendezvous. The 3rd may work, the 11th would have been better [Sorry Todd]. Agree w Russ & Todd that we too would be open to visiting a new venue. MYC top shelf albeit $$$.

Ron

That's great to hear, Ron. Adding you and Russ to the list of participants on the first page.

My wife and I stayed at Saybrook Marina, which also includes the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa, on our honeymoon. Well, actually, it was out honeymoon "do over".

In 2007, we went on a cruise in the 300DA we owned at the time, and this was to be our honeymoon. Unfortunately, on day 3 of the trip, we hit a submerged log in the Thames River, and promptly broke the driveshaft in the port drive - 200 miles from our home waters. I had the boat pulled, removed the drive, rented a car, and drove home with the broken drive and a disappointed wife. I spent the next 4 days ordering parts, and rebuilding the drive. Then we drove back to the boat, reinstalled the drive, and brought the boat home, whereupon I was out of vacation time, and had to return to work.

So, in 2008, on the honeymoon "do over", I made reservations for a couple nights in Saybrook, and my wife and I rented a suite there, and spent some time in the spa - there are massages available, makeovers, manicures, etc. etc. After the first honeymoon disaster, she deserved a bit of pampering!! Bottom line: the wives would love Saybrook, as long as the husbands don't mind paying for spa time!! I have no problem with it - the bar is right next door.

It's a beautiful spot - the marine is well sheltered, and there is a nice restaurant, pool, hotel, spa, etc. However, when we were there, it was quite full, so I am not sure if they can accommodate all of us at the same time.

Also, it's much closer to Russ' home waters in Mystic, so he can make it to the rendezvous, and then back home, on one engine.

just my $0.02.

Dale

Interesting story, Dale and I'm glad all worked out ok.

Looking at their site: http://www.saybrook.com/The-Marina the place looks pretty good. I passed it on the way to Essex last year. I called and waiting to hear back from them regarding their ability to accommodate a large group.

If we can have Brian lead the Sothshore caravan out to LI Sound we should be good anywhere on LIS side.

Here is my .02 cents....Any place closer for me is better......Why have two Rendevouz in New York/New Jersey.......Spread the wealth a bit so people from CT, RI and MA can join in............I am good with anything you do Alex as it is you who assumes all the work.......

Dale, glad you got to fix the Honeymoon!

We stayed this year at Saybrook on the boat and I would say it had been 12 years since we stayed there previous, there is plenty of room at Saybrook.... But, were they put groups of transients is just inside the fuel dock/breakwater wall, and you ROCK! These are also fixed docks and there is a good 6-7ft tide swing.... After we stayed there this year I remembered why I haven’t been back in so long! If you were considering this area you would be better going up to Essex already, Essex Island could accommodate a large group, we have gone there with our club and had over 40 boats. If this area is of interest we could work out transportation if people wanted to go to Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods for some gambling from here for an evening if one so should desire (me,me,me!)

I am also very happy staying with MYC....

Maybe a poll or Alex makes the call? I am willing to default to either. However being an open forum, here is my 2 cents- you know what they say about opinions! Greenport has plenty to do, been going for 20 yrs, great facility and very reasonable. They also accommodate large groups. As does Champlins, they host rendezvous much larger than ours at the dock. Larry is right about Saybrook, although we were on floaters. Also Essex is a good call. Conanicut sounds good, with a boat taxi to Newport. The possibilities are endless, we don't have to be locked into MYC but it's also a good choice.
Dale, if your bringing fuel bring a big block too ;-)
If everyone pitches in, as we all have, I'm sure this third year will be the best yet no matter where we end up.

FYI - this year 7/6,7,8 is Opsail in New London with all the tall ships. www.opsailct.org check it out

Alex

The weekend of the 3rd is at the back end of my planned 15 day boat trip, we intended to return to home port August 4th. I have others traveling with me and MYC is the one port everyone likes and it's usually the first one we stop at (7/21-24). I'll have to see if I can rearrange things. Russ's suggestion of Old Saybrook looks interesting. I'd throw in American Wharf as an alternative. It's a nice place, handles Rendevous' frequently and is the least expensive transient marina I've ever stayed at in the Northeast....and they have the cheapest fuel too. I'm always up for Block. Just as info....my plans currently include MYC, Newport, Nantucket, Block and Greenport. I'm happy to be the guide for the South Shore crew if I can switch things around.

Dale

Just a warning to anyone that hasn't been to MYC....wife pampering is raised to an art form on the east end of Long Island...you can't avoid a very expensive few days there. MYC has there own spa ($$$$$$) and drinks ($$$$$$$$) at their poolside bar will leave you with a bill that looks like you just fueled the boat. I have a wife and 5 (yes 5!!!) daughters who know how to charge all of this to my slip. When I left MYC last year I thought they had sold me the place. And, if they don't go to that spa they'll go to Gurney's or the Manor....Now, having said all that....I will definitely be back to MYC this year and I'm hoping to be there with all of you.

Great comments, guys. A mutual contribution is how we get things done. If we can outline 3-4 good candidates we should do a poll. My personal preference is to go some place new, but I'll go any place that provides good comfort for the group.

IMO, this is a showstopper, unless they will put us some place else.

Essex Island Marina - is very good suggestion. I only hope that they have different bridge operator.
American Wharf - http://americanwharf.com/amenities/# based how it's presented on their site it looks great. I'm guessing it'll be about 15miles run up the river?

......Why have two Rendevouz in New York/New Jersey.......Spread the wealth a bit so people from CT, RI and MA can join in.......
John,

Having several rendezvous adds several benefits. When we did it the first time in 2010 within a week apart, just in LI alone it worked out very well. Having different locations allows people that missed one event to join another. I wish I can always attend all of them. I always thought that having LI event will open the doors of opportunity for Northern NJ, LI, NY and CT folks. Perhaps finding a good place on LI Sound will add some more fun to the trip for most of us. It's an event that people should take in to the advantage to plan their trip and do few stops along the way.
