LH vs. RH PROPS

looking at buying a new prop. Can anyone tell me how to tell whether I need a left hand or right hand prop? I have a 86 268 with a 350 and alpha drive. Currently has a 15x15 alum. New to boating and not sure which I need

Set it on the ground. Pick it up with your right hand. Is it easy? You need a right hand prop. If it's not easy, pick it up with your left hand. Was it easy now? You need a left hand prop.

Thanks. Also, A RH prop spins clockwise when viewed from rear and boat moving forward. If you look at it from behind, the back of the blade on top will be further left than the front of that same blade.

Glen,

RH rotation is standard for single engine Alpha drives. Your propeller might have a RH stamp. Have a look at Merc's brochure. The majority of the propellers shown are RH rotation with the exception of the Bravo Three propset (counter rotating).

Lay the prop on the ground. With one blade pointing away from you picture pouring water on the blade and note which direction the water would flow. If it would flow right, its a right handed prop, left ='s left.

I have Nibral four bladed 22 X 22 props......neither prop is easy to pick up with either hand......I can bearly pick one up with two hands.......:grin:...
