I was just recently informed that the Coast Guard has a requirement that the fire system, extinguishers, halon systems or equivalent be inspected yearly and marked as such for many of the boats users have here.

If that is the case then mind is past due, again I hear this is also not an inexpensive task to have preformed.

So what is the typical manner of getting ones system updated. any cost figures available? I have been told it is typically around $300.00, and if the CG checks you and you are out of date. Possibly a hefty fine, so just what are the requirements?

Thanks

Part of the winterizing / spring commissioning from our dealer is to weigh and recharge if needed the automatic fire suppression fire extinguisher

You just have to weigh the halon unit and compare to the spec weight on the label or look at the pressure gauge in a dry chemical unit. If you want to professionally have it serviced, you can, but either of the above is enough.

The dry chemical units read good...But

Since we are talking about Halon here is there any special procedure I need to perform to disconnect the bottle to weight it?

Thanks

In addition to just weighing the halon unit, you have to fill out the tag that is attached to it! I know FC3 assumed that would be done, but I've been on a lot of boats with OLD blank tags! I believe the CG is trying to phase out halon? I can't remember the specifics, but something like halon units older than 25 years or something like that have to be "serviced" and replaced with a non-halon version. I'm just grasping at straws and remember seeing something along those lines.

Yes, you can pay someone to do it but by the time you call, get to the boat to meet them, wait for them to service it and write the check you can be done! Getting the halon unit out might require adding some bullet connectors. On our 250 DA (13 years old when we got our hands on her) and our 300 DA(18 years old when we added her to the fleet) the bottles had never been removed! They were hard wired with no means to remove them. I added some bullet connectors to make the annual service easier.
