Well first some background information. I have a 1999 400 Sea ray Sedan Bridge. Just had basically everything in my engine room redone. Cat 3116's, props, shafts, bearings, batt charger, etc etc etc etc etc. Everything but the ZF 220A-1 Marine gears.
I felt the Marine gears were in good shape, so all I did was put near gear oil coolers on them. I really wish someone would have upsold me the cables that go from the shifter to the Gear.
As the boat is 11 years old i assume the cable stretched or something along those lines and yesterday (while I was home in Canada working) my buddies went out in my boat in Cancun where the boat is, with my Captain and Mate and experienced a failure. Turns out the shifter was not engaged fully into forward, heated up and melted the clutch pack.
This is a sad and expensive day for me, but we all know what BOAT stands for... "Bust out another thousand)
The moral of the story is I will be allot more vigilant in making sure the shift cable is adjusted properly. And hopefully some of you will now get in the engine room and make sure yours are adjusted correctly.
Happy boating.
