Sheriff Ed Webb of Gates County told WAVY.com two boats were involved in the crash.
According to Lt. Mark Rich of the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, a bass boat with two men on board was traveling north when it struck another bass boat with a husband and wife on board that was heading south on the Chowan River. Lt. Rich said the boat with the two men on board ran over the top the boat with the couple on it, killing them.
A passerby who saw the crash called 911.
Both sets of boaters are from Virginia and the crash remains under investigation, Lt. Rich said.
