I just talked to our Harbor Master in Frankfort today.

He said a heads up for Leland. Apparently the channel depth is pretty darn shallow this year according to a few boats that have moved through [Frankfort]. Looks like they may not be doing any dredging this year either, I had heard COE funds are scarce.

We were planning on hitting the wine festival again this June, weekend of June 9. Will have to keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

Anyway, heads up.

Paul

Yipes! I was on the phohe to Snug Harbor in Pentwater and they have two sand bars to deal with.

We didn't get into it. I had writen the owner about getting resers as we do in Jacobson's. I have a hard time getting my gang of three to five boats to commit to $XXXX.xx in fuel and have to wait 'til 11:00AM to call to see if they have room. They're working on it.

Call Rene and bug her. I think it is a her. I got an email re this about three weeks ago. J

Is he talking about the entrance to the harbor or the docks on the east side of the main dock? The ferry to the Manitou Islands must draw 5-6 feet of more and has to get in and out on a daily basis.

Yes the entrance to the harbor. According to the Leland Harbor Master you should call ahead for specifics/instructions for entering the harbor. They are hoping to address the situation as soon as they can.

I'll bet the town will figure out how to get the entrance open. The downtown economy is heavily dependent on the harbor for its economy. The current administration is screwing boaters by diverting earmarked funds for other projects. Charlexois is having the same problem getting its new marina built.

There is a $50,000 fund raiser set to kick off to get the harbor dredged. I'll bet they get it done. :smt038

Just got off the phone with the Leland Harobor Master.

Yes there is still the shoaling issue with the harbor entrance but he siad the Coast Guard marked it pretty well yesterday. Once inside the harbor there is plenty of water. He said CG estimates water depth in channel is around 7 feet. Should be fine for most boats.

The harbor will be dredged in the near future. Right now there is an 80' boat sitting at the gas dock so it can't be too bad.

I'm contemplating a run around from Traverse City for the wine festival, but I can't leave until Friday afternoon. My understanding is that the marina fills up by Thursday. Anybody know if that's true? I'm also thinking if we can keep this shoaling issue alive, maybe the sailboaters will seek other harbors! :smt038

Open for feedback on this one.

Hi Jeff,

Last year we got there Thursday night and it was starting to fill up. There were still some larger slips available on Friday and boats came in. We are again planning to head out Thursday. Would be great to see you there, let us know.

Since I started this thought an update was in order. We went to Leland this past weekend for the wine festival, had a blast.

There are two red nuns marking the shoaling area just inside the brake wall. It is pretty tight up against the wall but not too bad so long as only one at a time.

They are scheduled to have it dredged in a couple/few weeks. The contractor is currently working on the Arcadia channel to the south and then headed to Leland. Good news for them.
