Ok, I give up, what's the difference in cool white vs. warm light in an LED bulb??

A cool white is a very white light, similar to white fluorescent. Warm light has the reds and oranges (there may be additional colors from the spectrum added) that make it seem more like an incandescent or halogen bulb.

Thanks Mikey!!! The ones I put through out the cabin are more white than I like, guess they are the cool ones.........damn!!! Merry Christmas Buddy!!:smt115

It has to do with the °Kelvin of the color of the light...Cool white are about 6000°K and are bluish white...Warm white is about 3500°K and as MM said have more yellow, orange, red, to look like a "regular" incandescent light...

This is the accurate answer.

Cool LEDs are approximately 5600 which is also referred to as Daylight. Warm is approximately 3200 which is also referred to as tungsten.

A little trick, if you ever want to change cool LEDs to warm, put an orange gel (CTO) on the light fixture. To go from warm to cool use a blue gel. Any camera lighting store will sell "color correction gels."

I am impressed. Ryan might be a fellow lighting designer. Also know that there are steps you can go with the Color Correction, Full CTO, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2. Full CTO will take daylight cool white 5600 down to warm white 3200 K. The others will get you in between . I hate cool white LED's on the boat or around the house. Too stark and unnatural after years of incandescent lighting.

I have changed all of my Halogens in my boat to warm LED.

MonacoMike is dead on. From a visual perspective, cool white is a bright white where as the warm white has a touch of yellow glow to it. if your cool white is too bright, consider adding in a dimmer as opposed to replacing them.

If you have halogen 10w G4 bulbs in your cabin (two prong), here's a great LED replacement:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/20pcs-G4-9-.../200868844516?ssPageName=ADME:B:WNARL:US:1123

These took my amp draw from 10 to 1 amp while on the hook (when the genny was not running) on my 340, and they provide the equivalent light.

Imtra or Perko has similar ones for $20 each.

Do you guys have any concerns with buying the LEDs found on eBay? Are all LEDs made the same or are there "sub-standard" LEDs to be on the lookout for? I recall seeing a video (on superbrightleds' website, I think) where they showed an "inferior" LED light overheating and falling apart. I'm all for the cost savings -- just want to make sure there's nothing to worry about re: the eBay LEDs.

Thoughts?

Did you find the back pins long enough to stay in the fixtures in the salon? The similar ones I ordered from LED Wholesalers were too short. Thanks

Mine were too long and I trimmed some off.

Radiojon - I bet they are all made in China now. Mine have all been fine on the 340.

Okay, perfect. I think I'll order some and make the switch!

Were you able to find any E14 LEDs for those couple of AC lights in the salon? I've searched all over and can't find anything that'll fit in that opening (neither LED nor original incandescent).

Here is the color temperature chart:

I used to be an electronic technician in a past life. I ended up working in the QC department testing and selling off aerospace cockpit displays of various commercial and defense related aircraft. Each aircraft had specifications that the displays had to meet which were measured with a spectrometer.

OK folks, Do you use the tower style bulb for the reading lights or the round flat style:huh:

Lance, I tried both - the flat ones, that I posted the link for, worked best in both the regular fixtures and the reading light fixtures...$1.50 each - heck, if you don't like them, trash 'em...
