I just finalized plans for a 600+ mile round trip to Canada's lovely Princess Louisa inlet this summer..... I think my boat burns roughly a gallon per mile, ouch.

Pack- you won’t be able to sit for a month after that cruise……

Amen to that!... I have spent $700 on fuel the past two months... I drive 12 miles one way to work 5 days a week and twice a week to school that is it. It just sucks to know what proportion of my paycheck goes to fuel just to earn it...

I drive 100 miles round trip for work...3.85 a gallon here right now
when gas hit 4.00 a gallon last time I was spending 25% of my takehome pay for fuel to and from work only on a 5 day week
I am salary so 6 day weeks just didn't happen at that time.

according to our imperious leader high fuel prices are to BOOST the economy
will increase sales in alt fuel and electric cars and give people "incentive" to
move closer to work.
this doesn't help me because an F'ing Prius won't pull my boat and I refuse to live in the big city.
I call BS on this "incentive" plan

He's a Chicago butt wipe! It's the value of the dollar that is hurting us totally at this point. Once it hits $4.00....the economy will spot dead in the water....higher food prices also, Mike.

There you go again! Can't you just follow the plan the "smart" leaders tell you to?

Hell with gas prices the way they are, my Sea Ray will be sitting in the slip most the summer.................

Broke a record yesterday when I filled the wife's car, $57 for less than 14 gallons. I am driving her car because I can't afford to drive my truck. This sucks

Benn filling up the truck when it gets to 1/2 tank just so it doesn't hurt so much looking at the total dollar on the pump. Less than 1/2 of a tank in the dancer.. that means about 60 gallons when she goes back in... holy crap

The real funny part was, in his speech, he said how proud he was to make car mfgrs double their fuel economy standards so the American people can put more of their hard earned cash in their wallets!! How does that math work out when the price of gas doubles:huh: not to mention the price of the chitbox car:smt021 We are so screwed!! When will we have had enough and take our country back from politicians, deadbeats and the EPA:smt101:smt013

damn us freethinkers
guess I'm just not a follower

How about that 440 6 bbl? That must suck a little gas???
ONLY IF YOU USED IT
if you could keep the foot light they ran on the center 2bbl under normal driving
if you stabbed it all 1620cfm would cause a race between the gas guage and the speedo

So I have seen a lot of threads and discussion about the price of gas on CSR lately. I cautiously enter the discussion, given there are some pretty strong (and emotional) positions. I am curious to know where the general feeling of "being ripped off" comes from. The same opinions exist here in Canada. I am not taking a position...I just like facts and data!

I view oil as the most important substance in the world today, and the one most likely one to cause wars and social and economic disparity. It is in finite supply, demand is growing exponentially, supply is becoming increasingly more challenging, and without it a developed society can do almost nothing.

Some round numbers (I haven't rigorously verified these numbers...correct me if I am way off):
- the US produces about 8 million barrels of oil per day,
- the US consumes about 20 million barrels of oil per day (about a quarter of the world's consumption...Canada is even worse per capita), importing 12,
- 15 of the 20 million barrels is for the transportation industry,
- a barrel produces around 20 gallons of gasoline (varies with oil type and processing, but an easy number to use...less if you use our Canadian stuff!),
- 15M x 20gal = 300 million gallons of gasoline per day are consumed by the transportation industry (I have seen numbers higher as well...some closer to 400 million),
- market price of gas is around $100 per barrel, or about $2.40 per gallon,
- the entire barrel of oil is used...gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil, lubricants, asphalt, etc.,
- in the US, total tax averages around $0.50 per gallon, so fuel for transportation generates about $150 million per day in government revenue, or $54 billion per year,
- the US debt increases at about $4 billion per day,
- approx breakdown of a $3.70 gallon of gas these days: $2.40 crude, $0.50 tax, $0.45 refining, $0.25 marketing and distribution, $0.10 local retailer.

So where is the biggest problem...
- the price being passed along for the 40% (8 of 20) of the supply that comes from the US?
- the cost of crude which is set globally?
- the $0.50 or so of tax per gallon?
- refining?

Should governments drop gas taxes completely and replace the revenue elsewhere?
If crude prices continue to rise, is there an expectation that governments should subsidize gas prices (selling US crude below market being one form of subsidy)?
Should governments somehow force companies they import from to lower their prices, and if so, how?

Until I took the new job 3 months ago, I was burning about 65 gallons a week for work in 2 vehicles. Now I am 3 miles from the house and buy 12 gallons a week. So I have gas money this summer. I have been banking the difference.

All I can say is thank the corporations and the speculators. The US has cut is daily use of fuel, Oil companies started exporting oil and gasoline to other countries, and the speculators keep making killings on profit by taking any little reason to jack up the prices. It is no longer about supply and demand. There is adequate supply and the demand is lowing, but the prices keep on rising from corporate greed!

See. . .. that is the problem. Facts, as you use the term rarely, if ever, have a role to play in discussions. ESPECIALLY if they do not support the point you are trying to make.

The sooner you abandon the use of "Facts" in your arguments. . the better off you will be. :)

In all seriousness, we get the feeling of being ripped off for a variety of reasons; not the least of which being when a gas station raises it's prices daily during an "oil spike" -> when that station only recieves fuel three times per week, and the refinery that produces that oil requires additional time for oil to reach the refinery. While gas prices go up as much as 5 cents per day, it rarely drops more than 5 cents per week.
