lateral markers!?

I'm on the gulf of mexico and am having trouble figuring out the intercoastal waterway lateral markers. If I'm going north (upstream) I understand red is to my right, but what about east/west? 'Red right returning' means that if I'm coming from the gulf of mexico to smaller body of water, red is to my right, but what about when I'm going from small body of water to other small bodies of water? Someone said money on the islands (green), rednecks on mainland, so if the island is to my right, so are green markers? Looking for definitive answers. Thx!
