Late 90's 270 Sundancer Thread

Thanks for the info. I thought it was two different lights but was not sure. If it was on a converter why two switches. MM

Also thanks Ruff. Figures there'd be some obscure bulb. I'll have to look for that adaptor.

MM my guess is that some people leave a light on when away from the boat and this allows them to do it and shut off the batteries. Just a guess. Also it's good for morons(like me) that forget to turn on the batteries and think that all the fixtures fried.

The bulb in mine is a 25 watt 6N 120 volt bulb. Haven't looked for them locally yet having just returned from a 7 day 'shipyard' repair trip to address 35 or so issues the previous owner had ignored. The brass lens fixture unscrews for access. The filaments in the bulb flickered annoyingly in response to the shore-side generator power source fluctuations. I'm hoping a new bulb resolves that issue, otherwise I'll find an alternative solution as Ruff Life mentions.

Is the long storage cabinet along the port side supposed to be attached? I just lost some cd's behind there and realized it just kind of floats. Can't find any means of fastening. I want to build a shelf up the for "spirits" and couldn't forgive myself if they fell down.

What thermostat is everyone using in their 7.4L MPI? I've been using a 140 degree for the 8 years I've owned the boat and it runs around 165-170 or so degrees. I recently had an upper engine rebuild done (manifolds, risers, elbows, heads, water pump, etc) and the mechanic put in a 160 degree t-stat based on Mercruiser specs and the boat ran hot (around 185 or so). He swapped it out for a 140 degree t-stat and the boat runs like it used to at around 170 degrees. I run in salt water in Florida.

We just bought a 1998 270 DA, 7.4 single Bravo III. We are concerned about loading and unloading the boat on the trailer as the weight is so much greater than my current 22 foot Chris Craft. I am TOTALLY new to the Sea Ray and am concerned are we going to not do this right?

For example, I have read in other threads about water getting into the engine thru exhaust. What are the exhaust issues for water getting in the engine? Is this something we have to do or is it automatic?

I can't find anything about this in the owners manual.

Further any other issues I need to know now and NOT at the marina?

I currently have a Dodge Dakota with tow weight of 7000 pounds. Given the fact the boat weighs empty 7500 and with fuel and trailer, I am now looking at a bigger truck, "We're going to need a bigger truck" (appologies to movie Jaws). In the meantime, I just pull it out and drive about 10 miles from home to launch ramp. Top speed 45 MPH.

We are in the process of upgrading our boathouse lift to 10,000 pounds.

Between the truck and the new lift, this boat is already over budget!!

Thanks!

You might find this thread on boat weights interesting: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/49765-weight-of-1990-250-DA-and-trailer-wet

I have never seen a "boat" project that came in on budget. They are just boat dollars.

I have this wide body 270 boat from year 2000. Most all of my posts have been about boats i.e. I have very few posts in the Tiki Bar section. Almost all of my posts are also about my 270 - either asking advice about it or some project I have completed. If you search with my name especially for started threads you will find most all of the info I have contributed about this boat.

I started to compile links to posts I have authored about the 270 that I thought were good and I may do so sometime but right now I am being lazy and reverting to the "use the search function" if you want to know anything I have posted about the 270. If I have not posted about it I have now almost completely taken the boat apart and back together again so I can answer a lot of questions about what something does or where it goes. I am not so good at telling why things do not work though.

Anyone have a pricing estimate for a 100 hour inspection on this model with a single 7.4 Bravo III?

Thanks!

Can I ask a favor - is anyone running a 6.2 MPI in your 270? If so can you tell me what gear ratio is in your b3 (2.0, 2.2, etc.) and what pitch prop set you are running, along with your WOT range?

Mine was repowered from a 7.4 to a 6.2 and I'm having a hell of a time getting close to the recommended 4800-5200 RPM range with the original drive and props that came with the boat.

Bump from last year. :smt100

Even if you have the original 7.4 - anyone who can post their rpms, pitch, (plus final drive gear ratio if they know it) and top speed would really help me out.

4400 RPMS WOT

22 pitch Bravo III

42 mph... last week end 3/4 fuel, full water, very little in the holding tank, 1 person, biminis up. This was on the speedo did not have gps hooked up. Boat has done 41 gps.

2.2 ratio (I think)

I have the 99 270 wide. With 3/4 fuel almost full water and empty holding tank. I always list to port pretty bad.. With just me on it as well as with 3 people sitting on the starboard side.??? I can straighten her out with tabs but why does anybody else have this prob I know the galley and head and helm are all port but starboard has table an extra battery 28 gal of water and so on.?? Anybody?

Well it didn't take me long and am picking up on Monday a 2007 Dodge RAM Diesel 2500 4 door crew cab. As my wife pointed out to me, the truck cost more than the boat!

Have to admit, it will all look good going down the road!

Just went through 1/2 of the 90's 270 SE forum AND this entire thread. Some great info here. Also leads me to ask some questions.

1. Why are there so few drink holders on this boat? Only the three in the port side dash are apparent to me am I missing something?

2. My boat with an empty holding tank and 1/2 full freshwater tank leans a bit to the starboard side while docked. Is this normal for 270 DA's?

Again - so glad I found this site and this thread. I hope to contribute in the near future.

1. You're not missing anything. The first thing I did when I got my boat was install 5 drink holders. 2 on port and 2 on starboard sides and one for the captain in next to the throttle. I got the drink holders from West Marine - they are of the flexible material and not the hard.

2. My boat does the same thing.

There is not much activity on this thread as you can tell from the dates. I have found some good info here.

Mine does that too. Seemed notice it more this year. i probably just didn't notice it before.

I added 3 fold out type holders and 2 fold out at the curves by the rear seat and lounge.

I'd like to think that our boats have less problems or we're just smarter.

I added 4 cup holders to my table a few years back. I drilled 4 holes and siliconed the inserts and it looks like a factory install. I was careful to make sure when I store the table under the deck hatch the cups hang down and clear the holding plate. Take a look at the pic and if you have any questions - ask away. Also a friend just bought me a rubbery cup holder that clamps (really just pushes) on the bimini rail. He got it at defender (added 2nd pic of it)
My boats lists slightly as well, maybe because the a/c unit would mount on the port side and may help. Obviously I don't have a/c.
I love my boat and think you will enjoy yours too.

Some information concerning the nav lights:

The nav lights I have are Perko A-16 lights. They are currently plastic and seem flimsy. Fortunately or unfortunately they are installed on a molded riser which mimics the shape of the lights, so a retrofit to another nav light is out of the question. The Perko A-16 form factor is still being produced which is good and are sold in a nice chrome finish when I get some extra $$$ to spend.

The bulb is a Perko festoon bulb fig 71 (12v 10 watt). I plan to upgrade to some led light bulbs which are readily available.

When testing the front nav lights it had me concerned since when I turned the nav lights on the bulbs did not light-up. I removed the covers and jiggled the bulb a bit and they flickered on and off. I would get them just right so they lit up, turn by back and they went off. When I pulled the bulbs for inspection the metal tips of the bulb were not “welded” to the glass at all and seem to float. Anyhow, buttoned everything up and hit the lake till dark and crossed my fingers while I turned the nav light switch and they came on!! I thought it would only be a matter of time till they went out, like when we hit some wake, and they were rock solid all night. Amazing.

I am not sure if the unstable connection are due to the bulbs, the contacts or the soldered wire connections to the base. Time will tell. When I metered the bulb contacts they appear somewhat steady 12v-13v.

Also 2 questions.

1.Under the aft dinette seat there is a wire mesh filter. What is this for? I don't have AC or heat, not sure it is for that or not.
2. The cabin floor carpet. Is this carpet removeable? Seems like it's glued down. True? Mine is pretty dirty and I would like to clean it.

1) I replace my nav light bulbs almost every year because of this problem - the new bulbs are attached to the glass but after a year they appear to be loose - I have sanded the contact area of the fixture lightly which helps with the corrosion on the conatc surface.
2) I believe the screen if for covering the hatch opening - mine was under the galley sink where there is a shelf to hold it in place when not in use. Under the hatch you will see plastic clips that pivot to hold the screen and frame up so when you are open no flies get in.
3) Carpet is glued in - maybe rent a capet cleaner at home depot?

Hope this helps.
