We're thinking about make a day trip up to Lake Wylie on Saturday just to get a change of scenery and see a new lake since its only about 30 minutes farther away from where we normally boat.

Is the Buster Boyd Access Area a descent place to put in?

What's the average water depth like? I'll study a lake chart before we head out, but are there any areas I should try to avoid?

Thanks for the help.

Dave S knows the lake better than I do but I thought I would address the issue of the ramp. During the week the buster bridge access point is great; on the weekend I personally do not like it. It gets pretty crowded and became a pain for us. Putting in is not a problem but getting out seems to be.

We put in here (link below) they do charge, however not much for one time. We have a season pass which is only $65 dollars. I think it is $6 for a day pass.

I would recommend using this access ramp. Not sure if we are going to make it out Saturday or not but if so we will keep a look out for you.

I do not think there is any areas that you should avoid. They have the lake marked pretty well.

edit: Bill, it would have helped had you had a picture of your boat in the virtual marina. :smt009

Wesley, Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at that ramp.

And, you'll be happy to know that there is now a photo of my boat in the virtual marina.

Being in the greater Charlotte area, Lake Wylie gets very crowded on the weekends so expect choppy waters in most areas. Lake depth varies with the deepest sections being around 50 feet. But unless you get up into the narrows in the north end or back in some of the coves or creeks it's hard to get yourself into trouble. Just be carefull and watch your depth meter if you venture out of the main areas of the lake.

There are two big sand bars which attract lots of folks if that's your interest. One is located about a mile north of the bridge (Route 49) that crosses the lake at the Buster Boyd launch area. The other is at the end of Little Allison Creek at the southern end of the lake. The water is a lot more "calm" down there. I think you will find the southern end of the lake better from Buster Boyd all the way to the dam. If you head north of Buster Boyd, the lake gets narrower and shallower. There are quite a few small coves where it's possible to get away from traffic and relax a bit. The lake water is quite warm now. Last week when we were out water temperatures were in the upper 80s and into the 90s in some places.

As far as launch ramps go, I would use the Copperhead ramp as well based on how busy things get at Buster Boyd but you can check it out when you get there. You can PM Wesley, but I think there may be a charge to use that ramp whereas Buster Boyd is free. If you can get out early AM there is a lot less traffic. After 6:00 PM things calm down quite a bit as well. On weekdays you will have the lake to yourself........that's usually when we try and go out.

Yes, we did make it to the lake, and we did find the sand bars although we didn't hang around them much. It is a little smaller and more crowded than the lakes we are usually on, but Lake Wylie is nice and we had a good day on the water. I'm glad we made the trip.

Wesley and Dave, thanks for the recomendations to launch at Copperhead. It was much less crowded than Buster Boyd, and it didn't cost us anything because there was no one around to collect any money and we didn't see any self-service money collection boxes.

We were suprised about the number of cruisers on the lake since its not a large lake, and there are certainly a lot of Sea Rays on the lake. We did stop at Lake Wylie Marina for a little while to walk through the Sea Ray showroom. Its always fun to take a look at new Sea Rays. :smt001

Bill

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. We were out yesterday too and actually it wasn't as crowded as I have seen it on some weekends. And your observations are correct about Sea Rays. They are more Sea Rays on that lake than any other brand.

Dave
