Got to knock something off my bucket list this summer. We went to Powell and camped there for about 5 days. WOW. It's like they filled up the Grand Canyon with water.

What an amazing place. I can't wait to go back.

Here are some of the picture we took.

Awesome! There are only a few things on my boating want-to-do but arent-going to-happen list and Lake Powell is one of them. I might make it there sometime myself as I have friends in Arizona but i doubt my boat will get there from Pennsylvania.

Looks like an absolutely beautiful place

Beautiful pics.....Powell is one of those "magical" boating destinations every boater should check out....you never forget it.

Truly is a amazing place.

It has been my boating home for well over 28 years and every trip I still find something new.

I am fortunate to spend around 150 days on the water there.

Oh man, don't give up on it. Sure that's a pretty long haul from PA ( Have some family there). It is worth going there and renting everything you need.

We rented a houseboat there the summer of 2017, and have another one rented for next summer. I was born and raised in Phoenix and never made it there.
I had to move to Washington State in order to go there. lol
I would love to trailer my 310 there, but that's quite a ways.

Lake Powell is on our short list of places to take the Whaler for a 3-4 day vacation.
it all.
Never having been there, for you guys who are familiar with it, where's the best location to get a hotel, or should be do a day or two in one location then move to another hotel.

Also, can you pretty much see the lake doing your boating from one location or do you really need to have two locations to see all.

The lake has what we call the North end and the South end.
North being Bull Frog Utah. From Salt lake city it is a 4.5 hour drive to Bull frog. There are only two hotels and three restaurants. This end of the lake is bare bones for any off lake amenities. There are no grocery stores on this end and the marina stores have just the necessities. If you plan to pack food and stay on your boat or house boat rental you need to do your shopping before you leave SLC.

The south end is the developed part of the lake. You have Two full service marinas with slip rentals Antelope Point marina and Waweep marina the Waweep marina has a hotel waters edge. Both have slip rentals. Page AZ is five miles from the launch ramp and the town has at least 20 hotels and all the shopping locations you will need.

Best time of year to vist the lake is September. The Air temp drops below 100 and the water temp is still in the high 80s. Sept,Oct, Nov are amazing months to be on the lake and so very quite. Early spring you can get skunked on the wether and the lake temp is still cold.

The lake has 1800 miles of shore Marinas at both ends of the lake and one in the middle "Dangling Rope marina" Dangling rope is only accessible by boat. All marinas have fuel, Ice, and some food and sundries.

The best way to see the lake is to rent a house boat however if your not taking a group that would be costly and hard to manage. You can day trip from both ends of the lake to major sites.
If I was going for the first time and staying in a hotel I would plan at least three days on the water. I would start at the south end and plan to run north the first day... stay at Bull Frog that night after a full day of seeing the sites then run back south the next day to see more of the sites going down lake. Third day stay south and just poke around the south end.
There are the mapped sites to see however the beauty and mystery to the lake is really just seeing each canyon off the main channel as you run and finding that one thing that blows your
mind in each canyon.

Each end of the lake has is own beauty the North end has hight cliffs, dark sand stone and more narrow canyons and the south end has more open bays with lighter sand stone.

To run from the South end to Bull Frog with out stoping in a runabout plan for a 3 hour run . If you site see on the same run it easily turns into a 8 hour day but well worth it.

There are many hidden gems to the lake. I am on the North end at Bull Frog.

If you stay in Page plan one half day off the lake and visit Antelope Canyon.. google it! You will need to buy tickets a couple months out and best time of day in to be in the canyon at noon.

ANY OF YOU ANYTIME YOU WANT TO COME MAKE SURE TO HIT ME UP AND I CAN SHOW YOU AROUND AND COCKTAILS ARE ALWAYS FLOWING AND A RELAXED TIME ON " ONATOPP"

Jim

Oh and pack two or at least one five gallon gas can!!!! Why? as you start to hit canyons you can easily burn through fuel without thinking about it and then you fall short getting back home.

Jim, you provided into on the lake like I provide into for people wanting to travel the Columbia River. Great job.

What I had planned to do was stay at the south end in a hotel. We'd run up to the north end in the morning and slow cruise our way back the rest of the day.

My boat carries 12 gallons of gas and gets about 10+mpg. An extra gallon would be a great help and I'll do that.

I'm very familiar with Antelope Canyon though I've never been there. That's a MUST SEE thing when we come up to Page. We'd probably do that on the last day before heading home.

We'd probably either be coming in October or during the first 3 months of the year. Either of those best for weather, or either a time to avoid? A 13' boat doesn't offer a heck of a lot of protection from the weather though I'm not afraid to run it in a chop.

I would make the trip the first couple weeks of October. You wont have the wind that comes the first part of the year and the air temp in October will be much warmer.

You can rent a good runabout if you where not wanting to trailer your Wailer from WA. As you get closer to your trip reach out to me. I would gladly meet you out on the lake and to also let you know the best sites to see on the lake.

I hear you buddy, I was born and raised in the Phoenix area (East Valley) and it wasnt until I moved to CO. back in 1997 that we finally took a road trip back here to see the Grand Canyon.

Jim,
We won't have to tow from WA down here, we have a 1981 Whaler 13' with a 40hp 2-stroker on it that we bought in Kingman a few years ago. It was totally restored before we bought it and has everything new except the motor. New includes wiring, gelcoat, wood, paint, cushions, etc.

I think we'll wait to do that trip until we come down next year in October. Thanks again for all the info. I truly appreciate it.
