Alright you Carolina folks, need some help. The admiral & I will be retiring ing a few years, want to move to warmer climates. We are hoping to make few trips this year check out the opportunities. We are in the process of selling the Crazy Lady, want to downsize and different style of boat. We also would like something on the water at the lake. Both lakes look like only 1-2 hr ride to the shore. After reading most of threads it sounds like Lake Moultrie is not a lake for carefree boating? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You are correct, Moultrie and Marion are both shallow lakes that are full of stumps and trees. Any boating will be done in the channels. How ever if you and the wife are die hard fishermen, Santee lakes are a paradise, also you lock down to the tail-race canal, which will take you to the cooper river then on to Charleston. Lake Murray is a clean deep water lake with lots of access to restaurants from the water as well as being located close to lots or shopping and dinning out in the Lexington and Columbia areas. If I were looking it would be Murray hands down. Nicky

Thanks Nicky, will heading there in a few months to check out Lake Murray. Hopefully we will be able to rent a place for a long weekend to start. Will rent a boat to check out things from the water. Thanks again for the input.

:huh:Hey you all, the admiral wanted to to know if there are gators in any of the larger lakes? We were watching Smithonians Arial America on SC they mentioned the low lands had gators and snakes. I can del with snakes, gators another story.

Lake Murray is nice - big and a lot like Lake Norman, it might be a little bigger than Norman. Close to Columbia SC, southern end is more developed. No gators! Never been on Marion or Moultrie so can't speak to those. The low country coastal areas of SC (Charleston, Hilton Head) definitely have gators.

Thanks all, been informed we heading down to Lake Murray in early May for a week to check things out. Can you all suggest any better places to deal with house & boat rental?

I would definitely go with Lake Murray. Clean, deep, and most of all, no stumps. Wateree is also an option, but much smaller and secluded.

Lake Marion is connected to Lake Moultrie via a canal a couple of miles long. And although I have been on Lake Moultrie a few times and have never seen one, there are some gators in there. This little guy was pulled out of there a few years ago. And there have been a few more like it caught over the years. And while they do almost always leave people alone, one man did lose an arm to another big one in Moultrie a few years ago. For the reasons others posted above and the fact that I prefer to stay at the top of the food chain when possible, I would pick Lake Murray over Marion or Moultrie.

We got house with a toon on Lake Murray for the week of 6/13, is anyone going to be around?

Sorry, I've already got plans that don't include the lake (unfortunately). Would love to be out on Lake Murray this weekend...have a great time! We had a great time out there two weekends ago.

We went, enjoyed, fell in love and bought!:smt038 Come late August we will close on a lakefront home in the Kims Cove area in Saluda Basin. Will be a vacation home and possible rental until we move permanently in a couple of years. It is a beautiful lake, friendly people and great fishing. Can't wait til we retire there, counting the days.

Tonysca6-What size and brand and model of boat was the "Crazy Lady?" The admiral and I are just looking around.

Thanks,
Bennett

Bennett,
Hi, she is a 1998 Sea Ray 420AC, 45' LOA, 14' beam, twin 350 HP Cat 3116 deisels, 8 KW generator, 2 cabins, 2heads. I believe it is still on Knot 10 website, it has all the details. We loved the boat and had a hard time parting ways, she was a floating condo. We kept her on the Chesapeake & anchored out a lot. Work is the main reason for selling, the past year didn't allow us to enjoy her as much & wanted to get back to lake boating. Found it at Lake Murray. Feel free to pm me if you need any further info.
