The south buoy is showing steep waves at 23 feet with gale force winds from the NW. I thought my ride from Saugatuck to Grand Haven was exciting last week end. Can't imagine what this would be like.

I have made a trip from south haven to st joe last year and the waves were 10+. I remember seeing them crest the bow and clear the stern. Wife wasnt real happy but there was no stopping seeing we we half way to st joe when the picked up. I cant imagine waves that big yikes

We are in the midst of canceling an island party/rendezvous... I'm bummed, but 23 footers make me feel a little better about Lake Erie's 14 footers!

Of course, there's always the "Erie factor" - somehow that lake can make 6' be as mean as 18' on other waters...

The bouy west of here (Lake Huron - Saginaw bay) is recording 12' - 14' Calling for even bigger tomorrow. Pretty rough. The ferry from Luddington is shut down for at least a day.

In South Haven they are coming over the north pier and right across the south pier. It looks like a few boats have some damage. The boats at the SH Yacht club are taking a beating. THe 56 foot Sea Ray named Mutual Fun broke loose at the head dock in front of the Maritime Museum. She was put under tow by JB marine just before it went out the channel. If you live here you need to get out and check your boat now!!!!!!

thats as of this afternoon. Good thing we are up river about 1/2 mile

Not really protected, as all my neighbors have left, but thanks to my expert knowledge of lines, she's safe (laughing). Here's a video to show what I mean.....

Damn this website....I've tried five times to embed these, and it's not working. I had issues earlier with the original video, now it's doing it again...AAARRRRGGGHHH!

The links are bad Scott. MM

On days like today, it's not hard to imagine why ocean going freighters sink on the Great Lakes.
Remember when Ted Turner dissed Lake Michigan before sailing in the Chicago/Mac race saying something on the order, "It's just a lake. Not like we're going out on the ocean." This was after competing in the America Cup. I believe his C/M race boat was de-masted and he failed to finish.

I apologize that the camera is so shakey, the winds were steady 40 knots, gusting to 50 when I took this video.

If you hadn't lost all of that weight you would be more stable! Nasty waves, that RIB should have been facing the other direction to take it on the bow.

I laugh when people tell me "it's just a lake". Our Great Lakes have swallowed many a ship in storms less than this. The biggest waves I've been in are 8-10ftrs and that was more than enough for me.

Good luck with your boats guys. Looks like you got them good and secure.
