Lake Huron Vacation

Back to the vaults...

Here's a pic of one of the turtles the guys have been talking about. This prehistoric monster came out from under our swim platform and swam around the back of the raft. Kids were happily swimming there before Mr. Turtle...afterwards, not so much!

We don't anchor in the pool as it is just too weedy. We were tied off against a rock wall just outside the pool and up from the Evinrude cottage. The whole channel is pretty well protected.

WOW - What kind of turtle is that? Snapping??????

We're going to head up there this summer for about 2 weeks, and your scaring me about the weather again, we went up there in July of 2007 and it was horrible.... cold and raining...this time I want 90 degree's and sun, and I don't need a bigger boat , but that 56 DB would be nice..

I believe that is a snapping turtle, however I'm no turtle expert. Whatever it was, it was a biggun'. Its shell was close to three feet long. It was a survivor.

As for weather, it can be pretty variable. A few years back, we didn't see any rain for the entire two weeks. 2009 was just terrible! The ladies couldn't wear their bikinis once - no swimming. This year (2010) was decent - but high winds. I'll do another post of is year's trip. In any event, it's always an adventure!

Great photos of a great trip, looks like a great family adventure. Time flies by, glad to see posts like this with memories to share.

We have been boating this area since 1963. Before there were the small craft charts, before Ralph Evinrude owned that cottage. We met him first in the Pool. He used to bring the first Chanticleer from Florida every year and anchor in the pool. We have known the family that owns the first cottage as you enter the Pool area for all these years. They have owned that cottage for over 100 years. What stories they have to tell.
The turtle is a snapper. I was told it is over 100 years old. It is a begger. It wanted food from you.
We used to anchor in the pool but your correct, its to weedy. We anchor just past the narrows as you approach the Pool,
We winter our boat at Barbeau about half way from Sault Ste. Marie and Detour. We launch and leave spending the entire season aboard and all at anchor. We never spend a night at a dock.
At the Bustards, down the Gun Barrel and around the curve is a little cut in the rocks. It is deep and you can turn in and tie right up to the rocks with lots of water.
We have met up with Ken (Iprof) several times.
I started a couple of threads in the Great Lakes section that might be of some value to those who want to go or return.
One is about trailering to the area.
A great write up and pictures of my favorite place in the world.
