Lake Carlyle, IL

We are thinking about meeting some friends at Lake Carlyle, IL this summer. This is a good half way mark between us. Can anyone comment on this lake? I saw that it is ~50 miles from St. Louis. Does it get really crowded? Is the lake level going to be an issue? Any information would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance..

Isn't Carlyle lake in IL.??? Don't know of a lake named that in MO. If it is the one in IL. keep an eye on your depth guage, there are shallow spots where you wouldn't think it would be shallow. Other than that it's a pretty nice lake.

Re: Lake Carlyle, IL

haha, yes I did mean IL. Good catch..

The funny thing is I picked this lake from Google maps and I guess I assumed it was MO.
That is what I get for assuming and not validating..

Thanks for the info. Hidden shallow spots are a good thing to know.. So, do a lot of boaters damage their outdrives, or are the shallow areas well marked?

The shallows are not marked at all... BTW, this lake has a ton of blow boaters on it. If it were me and you are meeting someone half way I'd consider the Mississippi as an option. You could put in at Alton Marina and have a whole lot more water to run in.

Sounds like this lake isn't much to write home about. I did just check the lake level and it is up 10 ft from normal pool. This should take care of those low spots.

I live right on the Mississippi and not to many people boat on the Mississippi down here in Memphis. The water is moving way to fast and there is a lot of underwater obstacles (which is guess is not an issue now since the river is high).

Any other recommedations for a good place to boat in this general area?

Thanks for all the info..

We have dams up this way! It's not a free flowing river like it is down your way. There's also plenty of entertainment/ places to go on the water. The river is more like a lake up here. This is where I boat every weekend along with many other folks.

Close to St. Louis, there just isn't any other place that is within a 2-3Hr. drive.

Okay, that makes me feel better. Thanks very much for the information.

Any recommendations on where to stay on the water?

Don't know what kind of accomodations your looking for but you can check this website for more info. http://www.visitalton.com/index.cfm

There is also Grafton Il. a few miles up the great river road you can check out too. Grafton is at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers.(better boating here to)

I think we have ruled out Lake Carlyle. Grafton looks like a fun spot on the river and we are also looking at Rend lake. Having a resort right on the lake is nice and convenient, but the scene looks much better in Grafton.

Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it. Keep it coming :)

Let me know if you decide on Grafton, I usually hang out on the weekends just across the river from there. I can point you in the right direction when you go looking for places on the river.

Gafton also has a pretty nice public ramp with a very nice (and new) marina right next to it.

If we had enough members a CSR get together in Grafton would be a lot of fun. It's hard for me to move my boat to another body of water. But we will show you around the river.

Grafton is our choice so far. It would be great to meet some local CSR members. We are now trying to find a good place to stay close to the water.. I will let you know the dates we will be there. I believe we are targeting June 13th, 14th, and 15th, but need to confirm.

Let us know when you firm up your plans. If you have any questions about the area just post up and I'm sure we can get the info. your looking for.

Its confirmed. We will be up there on June 13th - 15th (Fri - Sun). We just reserved a vacation rental in Grafton.

RiverRat & Skolbe, Hopefully we can meet up. It is always nice to hear about the hot spots and the spots to stay away from. Looking forward to it.

I will send both of you an IM with my contact info before we head up there.

The water level is high right now. But I idled around last weekend.

I was out last Sunday also... All of the ferries are closed due to high water right now. The water is predicted to come down some by next weekend though. I think the launch ramps at Grafton are also closed due to the high water. It really needs to quit raining around here...

Good info to know. Keep me posted on the levels and ramp status.

Oh, and yes I agree. We need it to stop raining. This is to much. We need some sun!!

I grew up in New Mexico where it is always dry and in drought. Here, we are flooded out with rain. One extreme for another. Some of this rain needs to go to the southwest.

Thanks
