Boat Info
1988 SeaRay Laguna 23
Engines
Twin Mercury 135hp
I have a 1988 SeaRay Laguna 24 that I purchased over 2 years ago. The Boat was basically abandoned when I found it, after many hours of cleaning, polishing, electrical rewiring, and other items she has provided 2 years of fun on the water. Currently I am considering replacing the aging Mercury's 135 BlackMax, they are easy to work on and have been nothing but reliable, but I can see in the near future having to replace major components, like lower units, head gaskets, and trim/tilt unit.

My question is in reference to the transom, I know SeaRay had some issues with these boats in reference to transom stability and had issue a bulletin to dealer to add a reinforcement bracket to the transom, my boat show no problem at all, but wanted to research what this bracket was since if I do repower will be with more powerful engines.

Can anyone here provide some information in reference to this reinforcement, maybe some picture of what the actual bracket looks like.

Thank you in advance.

Waiting to hear a response on this one. I have a 1994 and never heard anything about the bracket or a weak transom.

Not familiar with the plate, or known transom issues on this model. However, FWIW, I had a 1995 24CC Laguna with twin 200 mercs and never had any issues with the transom. I know that's a lot more weight than you've got with the 135's, so I wouldn't worry about much if you've got no reason to detect a problem. Good luck!

I am extremely familiar with the 24 Laguna's, especially in the 90's. I personally built many Laguna's in my days on the boat building floor. Riptide & Shaun (Lucky's) are right in NO issue on their 24's.

shft, can you provide me with an HIN so I can look at your boat only? Again, I can answer more than a few questions regarding this great boat and hope I can help with your concerns.

Was hoping you'd see this thread! The resident expert on the Laguna (and every other SR!)

Capt. Higgins, I sent you a PM with the HIN information. I really appreciate any information you could share, so far this has been a great Boat for us, it fits my and family's needs very well, but before I continue to invest money and time on improvement I am trying to learn as much as I can about the hull, this been the one thing it be difficult and costly to repair.

Here are a couple of pictures of the Boat,

This is the day I picked her up;

Wow, looking at the before picture She really needed you! I'm glad she's also been good to you. Amazing what a little TLC can do. Good luck, Brian

Yes, she cleaned up well.

Under the covers I replaced the fuel tank, almost all the wiring was replaced or re terminated, gauge cluster was redone with new gauges, new bilge pumps (2) and fresh water pump, had to repair a bad stringer, tank cover and bow pulpit that was soft.

On the engines, I replace all the electronics on both of them, rebuilt complete fuel system, replaced all the rubber hoses and removed and cleaned all electric connections, if course impeller, puppet valve and gear oil was also replaces.

Oh almost forgot, 1/2 gallon of 3m rubbing compound and two harbor freight polisher, burned one while polishing the glass, lol.

Still there are things to do but all and all I am very pleased with how it has turned out.

I recently bout a 1991 Laguna 24 center console. The person selling it doesn’t have much knowledge or information on boats LOL. It currently has twin mercury 150 black Max’s on it. I want to repower it but the placard that tells how much max HP and weight is missing. I have researched online and I can’t find an answer! I also emailed searay over 2 weeks ago and still no reply. I tried calling but nobody that answers can give me any info on the recommended max hp etc? Any info you could pass my way would be appreciated.
