KVH Satalite TV

This doesn't answer your question, but our KVH M3 system was working with the DISH Network until about 3 weeks ago, then suddenly quit ("looking for satellites"). I was told by KVH technician that DISH upgraded their network protocols to allow for $K and super HD TVs, and my 2 year system was now obsolete for DISH network. I assume other with KVH / DISH combo had the same problem and I would be interested in their solutions. I was told that the only options are 1) but a new satellite system (not going to happen; or 2) switch to Direct TV, which I understand is only available in SD not HD. I tried to switch to Direct TV, waited at the boat for the installer to show up, and when he did he said they're not allowed to install on boats ! So I have to buy the receiver form an independent company, get it installed and then call Direct TV to start the service. What a PITA.

Same issue here

Larry - you might try contacting Seawide. They're located just around the corner from Fisherman's Terminal. This is the company that provided our receiver. I know that they sell the DISH satellite dishes and I'm sure they should be able to help you with programming or at least point you in the right direction for help.

You could also try calling Tom from BigBay. He was the one I consulted with prior to ordering our DirecTV receiver:

Tom Isaacson
Big Bay Technologies, Inc

I remember that he has the same setup that you do and he's likely having to solve the same problem.

Good luck and sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. This darn work keeps getting in the way of my boating! ;)

One more thing...if you do decide to go with DirecTV, in our experience the SD signal is not bad. I had expected it to be pretty grainy compared to HD but it's honestly fine. So if you do end up having to go the DirecTV route, SD is not the end of the world.

Thanks Sandy! I have been procrastinating on this issue due to frustration but will start talking it again in the next week or so.

Thanks for your reply. I have a couple of local sources to buy a receiver directly and have it installed. I posted my note to see if others have any other solutions. We have had our boat for only a few months and finally got the satellite system with DISH working - it was quite a surprise to have it suddenly go offline. I simply can't understand why DISH would perform an upgrade that wasn't backwardly compatible with existing customers, so was checking to make sure my information is correct. It seems like our only option now is to get a DirecTV account with our KVH M3 system and then only get SD reception. Seems like a giant step backward!

I have 3 of them I may consider selling.

Totally understand the frustration! We'll be on the log boom for opening day with the Bellevue Yacht Club group (next to the UW group). If you'll be around, you're welcome to stop by and see our setup. Or we could meet you at our dock at some point too - just let me know!

Paul: this is great info - thanks. I'll be giving it a try soon.

Confirmed! KVH M3 with DISH does work. Keep in mind you are dealing with channels only from satellite 119, and minor programming to the antenna is required.

That's great - thanks for letting me know. I'll start working on it this week.

I know most were focused on the Dish network, but I too inherited an M3 dx with my 2004 390 MY. I got the direct tv receiver from dTV and hooked it up and was able to get some channels, but very few compared to my home account which it is part of. It appears the satellite control box can only locate satellite 101 and not 110 or 119 which I understand it must switch to in order to receive all channels. I set up the dish for 3 LNB 18x20 dish on set up and it gives me an "error on tuner 1" after setting up the satellite. Any ideas from anyone on here about the proper setup of DTV?
Thanks,
Rob
