Kohler 5ECD to Vessel View 7

These 2 pages in the service manual cover it. I tried to attach the entire manual but it is too large.

What should the cn setting be?

Are you sure the vv displays values with the gen not running?
I’m not in the water so I can’t run it

Cn02. And my software version is 3.12. If you can’t get it to work then let me know what your SN is as well.

As long as your genset is ON (front display is powered) then it will work on the Vesselview.

Screen still blank. My settings are all correct based on service manual. Cn is 02

Software is 2.11. Forgot to look at sn

sn is 2166476

Radman...just so we’re all on the same page, in the diagram below, you did not use parts 899750t01 or 889280t01. You connected the purple cable direct to a junction box.

Should there be a termination resistor in the unused plug at the generator end? (Where 899750t01 is shown)

That’s correct. I went straight from the genset to the hub and did not use those cables.

For that second cable I don’t believe what I have is a terminator. I’m pretty sure that it’s just a dust cap cover. And that sounds right to me too because there would instead be a terminator on each electrical side of the hub.

How do you normally start your genset? For mine I have a 2 inch remote gauge (GM85174-KP1) in my cabin.

I was trying to get more info last night on the software version numbers. I found this link that lists them (pg 2) but doesn’t do a good job of describing the changes in each version. I still think it has something to do with the software version number. I was also trying to find more info on how to get the actual software and then how to do the download and didn’t have a whole lot of luck.

Page 6 gives an overview of the CN codes.

I see you have an update on the SN. That SN is very close to mine. I wonder if a previous owner of my boat had the software updated. It doesn’t make much sense to me that my SW would be at such a higher version version than yours.

I have a momentary contact switch that starts the gen.
I went down this road once before and was told that only auth service could update software. My manual has a section on connecting it to smartcraft so I would think it was capable with the original software.

I'm glad you shared this diagram and picture. I can only go under the helm so bare with me (boat in storage). I was able to see the cable in the diagram, the purple cable on the bottom right, however, it is reversed and Y end is connected to the Smartcraft labeled (Can V). Picture attached. When I looked at the VesselView Screen, the red button was on. I'm 2 months from testing in the water.

Even with the genset not running you will still see battery voltage, genset hours, and the “Kohler” name on the screen if everything is working right.

I have seen this diagram floating around the web but not sure where it comes from. I did a search and can find it a bunch of places but not in an actual manual.

Your wiring may be different due to the axius. My smartcraft wiring diagrams specifically say “not for axius”

So, I got mine working. Thanks to radman for finding the smartcraft cable not connected at the helm. However his way (smartcraft cable connected to junction box) did not work for me.

I basically hooked mine up the way it is shown in the Merc diagram (smartcraft cable connected to vessel view adaptor harness). The diagram shows an adapter to convert the smartcraft plug to the vv CAN plug which I did not have, so I spliced the wires together. You would probably want to buy the adapter, but I figured that cable has been unused in my boat for 13 years...

Only thing I haven’t figured out is what the adapter is in the Merc diagram connected to the unused plug at the gen. I didn’t use it.

That’s great - good job on thinking that through. I’m still scratching my head on why helm or splicing into the line would matter. Happy to hear someone else got it to work.

I’m with you. You would think the orange/green wires going into the box would be connected to the orange/green coming out of the box, but apparently not.

Nice work. I was at the boat today, opened the hatch to get the generator, and saw the 2 unconnected harnesses. I did connect them, but got nothing at the Vesselveiw. I do have a different cable at the helm as it does have a Can V type harness. I have to go back and see how it looks.

Great job though.

So I was doing some digging, and in the Manual for the Smartcraft NMEA 2000 gateway, I found this page. Clearly outlines that the genset data should be transmitted over the NMEA 2k network. This means, if you have NMEA 2000 network, your genset data can be displayed on any MFD connected to the NMEA 2000 network.
Manual is 90-8M0088235

Thought I'd chime in on the thread. While changing the gen set impeller, I found the purple can cable bundled and tied up up above the generator. Hooked it up to the unused plug on the back of the gen but no luck on the VV. Went in search of the other end of the purple cable, discovered it was bundled and tied behind the side panel at the helm where the northstar box lives. Ran it the rest of the way up to the smartcraft junctions and voila, gen data on the VV.

I found it interesting there were only two pins on the unused gen plug, seems like more data flowing than just two would transmit.

Thanks to all who've posted above, it was a ton of help
