Last Fall our gen would run rough at cold startup, sometimes clear up, sometimes not. Restarting a time or two usually fixed the problem. I attributed it to a fouled spark plug & changed both last weekend. Doing a test run while in the engine room the same thing happened & I discovered it wasn't the plugs but what I assume is the auto-choke was not opening as soon as the engine spun up to normal rpm. By barely touching the choke linkage I was able to cause it to open & the gen to run smoothly. After this test I re-started & again, the choke stuck, then opened when I touched the linkage.

Do I spray some lub on the linkage or is the problem elsewhere?

Here is a post started awhile back....

I only have issues after the engine room has cooled down from an overnighter below 60 degrees and start it the next morning. I just open my hatch enough and reach in to flick the linkage. I chose not to attempt adjusting it because it ran perfect otherwise. I'm not sure if any spray lube would help yours or not....I'd try it, it can't hurt.

Hope this is helpful.

thx Jeff for link, exactly my problem, symptoms & experiences. I'll see if my mine has described adjustment, bet not, will report what I find.

Sorry, forgot to update. I sprayed some carb lube (auto mechanic buddy loaned me) on choke mechanism linkage & as advertized, it allowed the spring or vaccuum to do what it's supposed to do & the problem was solved.
