Hi all. 1996 Sundancer 270 with Kohler 4CZ genset. Has run great for many years until recently. Will not start from remote panel. Only way to get it to start is to manually close the choke while starting it.
Once it starts, have to manipulate the choke by hand until genset warms a little. It will run but then begins to surge for a little bit (pretty big surge - not normal loading). Once that smooths out, it runs great for about 20 minutes or so then shuts down. I can restart it right away but have to manipulate the choke to keep it running.
Any suggestions? Good water flow out the exhaust port so appears seawater pump is good. Run on recent oil change (Mobile 1 full synthetic) with good oil level. Fuel is fresh but all the same, running Stabil in it like I usually do.
I thought of the the following 3 possible problems:
A. fouled plugs (will check tomorrow but hard to see how that would cause the problems I am seeing).
B. fouled carburetor (guess I could see this but doesn't account for issues with choke it seems to me).
C. choke solenoid is no good (where to get replacement)?
The genset does seem to be running a bit fast to me. Recently had to replace the auxilliary fuel pump (was told it was called a prime pump) since the old inline fuel pump died. Replaced with a model from an online generator retailer they said would work as old style no longer available (Facet brand pump) and put inline a seperate fuel shutoff valve.
Thanks in advance for your help.
