I rebuilt both outdrives, including new u joints and gimball bearing. Took the boat out for a test ride and everything worked fine except for the knocking when the steering was maxed out in one direction or the other. Like a hammering sound, has anyone had this happen??

I haven't had that issue, but it smells like a U joint problem. I can't think of anything else in there that can cause that.

I would pull the drives and make sure that the U joints look the same as they did when they were first installed.

I agree on looking at the joints and ensure they are the same size as the original ones.
That could also be a gimbal bearing noise.
Easy to change or have changed with correct tools.
But, really sounds like the u-joints..

Good Luck,

Mark.

Get a large bar or screw driver put it up to your ear on either drive while someone turns them. You should be able to hear what one it is. Just my 2 cents.
