Knocking and loss of power

With my 2002 Sundancer 260 I'm getting loud knocking in the area of the stern drive and loss of power at 1500 rpm and higher. I figure my coupler has gone bad, but I'm not getting the burning rubber smell that I hear usually accompanies bad couplers. Any thoughts or suggestions concerning the cause of this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Do you hear any knocking when you raise the engine speed in neutral?

In neutral the engine runs fine. Also, up to 1100 rpm there's no problem with the boat moving at around 5 mph.

it goes without saying you have a serious issue in the outdrive, you’re gonna néed to get her outta the water and drop that drive. That’s always a bummer..($)…good luck!
