Group tells Ronald McDonald to take a hike

A corporate watchdog group that got rid of Joe Camel is after another icon - this time, its target is tall, red and happy.

Corporate Accountability International plans to host a retirement party for Ronald McDonald as it releases a report Wednesday that basically says, "We’re not loving it. " The report calls for McDonald’s to stop using the iconic clown.
“For nearly 50 years, Ronald McDonald has hooked kids on unhealthy foods spurring a deadly epidemic of diet-related diseases,” said Deborah Lapidus, the senior organizer at Corporate Accountability International. “Ultimately the report makes the case that it’s time that McDonald’s stop directing fast food to kids. Really, Ronald deserves a break and so do we.”

The group plans to hold events outside of McDonald's throughout the country and wants the fast food chain to stop using its corporate mascot. The mascot makes children “vulnerable to manipulations to marketing” and turns them on to junk food at an age when childhood obesity rates have soared, Lapidus said.

The group is employing the same strategy as it did to target the cigarette mascot in its “Send Joe Camel packing” campaign in the 1990s.

The anti-tobacco lobby was also a big business and clearly had to move on to another initiative, otherwise a bunch of folks would be unemployed. Then there's the lawyers... Please people, think of the lawyers.

.

God forbid that parents take an active role in their child's life and limit their intake of junk food. Or, I know this will be contraversial, send their asses outside to run around. This crap is amazing. There is no such thing as personal responsibility any more. We need more liberals to save us from ourselves. Thank God we have Obamer and big government to come to the rescue.:smt021 This $hit is absolutely out of control.:smt100

This country is really starting to suck and we just put the hammer down headed in the wrong direction...

As a fellow Ronald, I'm outraged.

This dumbass & her blind followers can be glad I don't still have McDonald's stock. I've always wanted to beat some liberal protester's a$$ out in front of a fast food joint.

Maybe I should rebuy some stock just so I feel justified in doing it.

The only way to stop this is to make a mandatory draft. That's all I have to say.

What about the Ronald McDonald House Charities and all they do? kill the Clown and what happens to that? Damn dogooders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for saving me a lot of typing. I agree 110%

Hmmm So let me get this straight.
If after a 2+ hour hockey practice or game, followed by a short SUV Ride (god I know I am guilty of polluting the environment) to the next athletic event I need to stop and 're-provision' my son with some fast food, I am in violation of the "get rid of Ronald Manifisto"?

F**k all of them!
I have seen no ill effects of a mimimal fast food diet in my son.
Shortly to be 21 years old 6'4" tall and 245# and playing D-II Rugby at a very prominent East Coast College.

Let parents take responsibility, not the government again.

OOPS! I forgot about O'Bama Care!!!

My $0.02 worth again.
I am getting very tired of this S**T!

I never was a huge clown fan, but nowadays that is all we have in the majority of the elected offices ATM. To hell in a handbasket.

You all hear about the proposed tax on soda, mixes (kool aid, iced tea, lemonade) and sugary drinks in NYS? Cloaked as a way to make our "children healthier," it's another scheme to support the tax and spend policies of a liberal democrat governor.

This is something we are going to have to get used to because it will grow more pervasive. We can yell and b1tch and moan but the elected officials are not listening. America is becoming a soft dictatorship. We are being forced to increased our reliance on the government as government ignores the voice of the people. Government by the people, for the people????? HARDLY. November cannot come fast enough (although I hate to see boating season end!!)

I underestimated the creepiness of a clown

LOL I don't think it's the clown that has my kids hooked on McDonalds. It's the toys in the happy meals... Get rid of them and there will be no reason why my children want to go to McDonalds!!!

Ron, something like 30 states already have small taxes on sodas etc. A "new report" according to Fox said the tax had no effect on willingness to purchase, so now "they" want to raise the tax even more. I guess guys like you and I should fight that for more reasons than the taxes. Less cavities? Oh no...

Exactly my point! That tax is not a deterrent - it's a money making venture. To justify it, they claim an altruistic goal - save our children from obesity. They don't even bother to mention dental health. What a bunch of dooshes!!!!:smt013
