Kenyon Kiss Butane stove in 260da

DANGER WITH KENYON BUTANE STOVE!!!!!!!!!!! I WANTED TO REVITALIZE THIS OLD THREAD.

My 2001 245 WE came with the Kenyon Kiss Butane stove. I checked the stove out when i got the boat and everything looked and worked perfectly. I knew there were concerns, but i thought i would "keep a close eye on it". Stayed close and very tentative while using it.

But over the weekend, i sadly learned why I made the mistake of NOT taking it out immediately. Mine leaked into the cabinet under the stove and exploded after bing lit for a few minutes. No signs of leaking gas, bad seals. Nothing. Just a fireball burning the hair off my legs and belly. It blew the sink out of the counter, and the upholstery off the outside of the cabinet.

Never again will i read about concerns so dangerous and not take immediate action to eliminate the risk in my boat.

Please do not make the same mistake I did and assume that if there is a problem you will know about it before it blows up your boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought a 280 in December of 2019. Tried the butane stove over the weekend. Instant fire in the fridge cabinet. These stoves are deadly. I had to take the stove out while the cabinet was on fire to use the extinguisher.
Kenyon have only offered a 35% discount on my replacement unit.
Kenyon acknowledges that these stoves will leak without frequent servicing.
Beware

Old thread I know but mine just set on fire - on a used boat that I bought last month
As I’m in Australia the previous owner shouldn’t have been using the butane anyway

OMG! I just bought a 2001 245 Weekender with this same stove. 2 days ago I boiled a kettle of water for tea without any issue. Well, tonight I thought I’d boil another pot while I was working. Heard a loud “poof” under in the cabinet and saw the flash. The flames came up from the stove and nearly were reaching the ceiling. I threw water on it and finally grabbed a blanket to suffocate the flame and snuff it out.
I was really scared there that I wouldn’t be able to stop the fire. Luckily no damage from the flames but the metal lid is bent to hell from me frantically trying to stamp out the flames.
And somehow I sliced my finger during the process. Probably trying to rip the canister compartment open to pull out the stupid can.

There is a fire extinguisher out in the cockpit but of course I don’t even think of that until later.

This thing is coming out!
I wonder if Kenyon would replace it with an electric unit?

We are also looking into a Magma BBQ that we can use outside on the swimstep, extending that sucker over the water so if any issues it can go right into the drink!

I can't believe they would put a butane stove in the cabin

My 2006 240 Sundancer has the butane stove. I used it occasionaly for years, and encountered 2 problems:
1) The stove's butane compartment is vented via a hose to a through hull opening as a safety feature. That way if butane leaks into the sealed compartment, it cannot escape into the cabin, it just vents outdoors. So check the vent path for leaks and plugs. When I was still using mine, I found the through-hull opening plugged with a mud dauber nest. So I added a maintenance item for that and kept using it.

2) Years later, while installing a new cannister, butane started spraying from the stove seal that mates with the cannister. After learning about the history of seal failures, I contacted Kenyon but got no help at all, so I just stopped using it. It always did seem a little dicey using an open flame stove in the tiny 240 cabin. After that we just used the microwave.

I recently saw a YouTube video where the guy took one apart. The gas tube runs through the part that hinges to the burner. There are 3 O-rings inside of the part that hinges that seal the gas in. The person making the video said that Kenyon told him once that these were the point of failure.

Edit: Just happened to run across it again.

We replaced ours with induction cook top with the same demensions. No fire hazards, only downside is the boat needs shore power or the generator to cook.

Our old Kenyon alcohol stove seals were bad when we bought our 300DA. Trying to find seals from Kenyon or anyone, for that matter, was a dead end. With no genny for the electric side and not being with shore power much, we have the single burner butane stoves that get set up on the back on a nice home made filet table. I just put a smear of synthetic grease in the neck of the butane can when they are new.

I was shocked at how high those flames will go in a pressurized system stove.

Jgren - I’m new to the forum. I joined because I’m seeking a solution to replace the KISS stove on my 2009 DA. I had the same stove failure last summer and am looking to remove and replace. Interested to know what induction unit you used with the same dimensions.

Looking forward to participating in this forum.
